Imagine meeting someone famous, directing an f-bomb at them, and calling them a traitor.
Country music star Jake Owen took to social media recently to share a story about that very thing happening to him. Why was someone so ugly to the “Anywhere With You” singer? Well, it had to do with the car that he was driving that day. Hint: not only is it electric, it’s politically charged (thanks, I’ll be here all week).
Jake Owen opened up his story time with this:
“You guys are going to love this one. For those that know me, I love cars. I’ve always loved cars. Since I was a little kid, all I ever wanted was like a cool car at some point. I drove to Nashville in a 2000 Toyota 4Runner…
Long story short, I got a record deal and I’ve had a few different cars. I still have some cool ones that I really love. Never in my life have I experienced some s**t like this.”
That “s**t like this” stemmed from the fact that he was driving around a Tesla Cybertruck. Obviously, Tesla vehicles became rather divisive early on in 2025 when Elon Musk and President Donald Trump were as thick as thieves. That relationship has changed a bit in recent months, but the stigma around Teslas remain.
Specifically Tesla Cybertrucks, which Jake Owen reluctantly bought and then fell in love with:
“Well last year I guess I got this email I’d forgot about where I put a $100 bucks down on a Tesla Cybertruck. I’ve never had a Tesla… I’m like, ‘No way I’m gonna keep this Tesla. I’m just gonna buy it, I’ll sell it, make a little money on it.’
I got home and drove it and this thing is badass. Like a freaking space ship. I don’t even have to drive it. I take my hands off the wheel. It drives me.”
Sounds like a pretty sick ride to me.
Owen’s story really got good when he detailed two separate trips that he had taken to Starbucks lately. The first coffee run he went on, he drove there in his tried-and-true 4Runner. That led to a very positive interaction with someone who was also grabbing a cup of joe:
“A few days ago, I was driving my 2000 Toyota 4Runner. I stopped for my normal brown sugar shaken espresso at Starbucks. This guys randomly in line goes, ‘Dude is that your 4Runner out there?’ I was like, ‘Yeah dude. Isn’t that thing sweet?’ He and I got in a conversation about how awesome Toyota 4Runners are and it was a really cool experience with a stranger.”
Always nice to have a positive run in with someone you’ll probably never see again.
Owen says that a couple of days later, he went to the same Starbucks, and just so happened to make the Tesla Cybertruck is driver that day. Once again, he ran into someone at the coffee shop that noticed the vehicle that he was driving… only this time, there were no compliments given:
“I drive my Cybertruck and I pull up to Starbucks and this guy’s kind of staring at me funny. Different guy, by the way. I get out, he’s like, ‘Is that yours? That Cybertruck?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I mean I am driving it.’ He goes, ‘F**k you, traitor.’
Hooray for “tolerance,” huh?
“I swear. I was like, ‘What?’ This is before we went in… I was walking behind this guy to get my coffee and I’m thinking to myself, ‘Did that just happen?’ Anyways, if you want to get picked on, drive a cyber truck. If you don’t want to get picked on, just go back to the 2000 Toyota 4Runner
What a juxtaposition of Starbucks trips, eh?
I had honestly thought that all of the Tesla backlash had died down. Jake Owen is here to let me and the world know that Tesla haters are still running rampant, and they might even be at your favorite coffee shop. The good news is that the country singer got the last laugh after being called a traitor by a total stranger. He concluded his story time with a jab at the f-bomb dropping Starbucks drinker that verbally attacked him:
“The best part of the story is the guy was there to pick up his blended Frappuccino. So the guy that told me to F-off and that I’m a traitor was picking up his to-go order blended Frappuccino. So I don’t know who’s in the wrong here. Me for driving the Cybertruck or this guy for ordering a blended Frappuccino?”
I’m with Jake Owen on this one…
But while you’re here, check out Jake’s new single “Dreams To Dream.” It’s pretty damn good.
