‘He’s making it worse’ – Martin Keown says Ruben Amorim must take responsibility for Man United struggles

However that hasn’t been the case with Man United failing to find any sort of consistency, individually or collectively. With a big summer rebuild expected, Amorim has avoided serious scrutiny in his reign so far despite sticking firmly with his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation. But according to Keown, Amorim’s performance as head coach has to be questioned. Speaking on White and Jordan, Keown said: “What you want for Manchester United is to see a little bit of pride in the shirt. When you think about their illustrious history it must be a hard watch for former players. “I was watching it yesterday and I was thinking that Amorim looks out of his depth. “None of the players were really responding to him. The only player who plays without fear is Fernandes and I’d think that reflects poorly on me as the manager. “They don’t understand what I’m asking them to do, they don’t like the system.” Asked if Amorim still wants to be there, Keown replied: “He looks like he’d rather be anywhere else but there. He looks passive, like it’s all going on around him, he’s not getting his message across to the players, the defence is error-ridden and the ball goes into the front player and no one can secure possession. “There’s no pace in behind so when you play Manchester United it must be a joy that you can just roll over the top of them. “Newcastle were magnificent and they just pressed, pressed, pressed and it was only a matter of time because Man United don’t have any variation to their play so they just gave the ball away. “It’s almost like a poor vocabulary of tactics when you can’t make changes and adjust for the here and now. “In the long-term, we understand it. You want to play with five at the back but you’re not getting results. Had it been perfect he wouldn’t have got the opportunity in the first place.” Asked about Man United’s insistence that Amorim joined the club immediately rather than waiting until the summer as he wished, Jordan replied: “They can’t hang about waiting for a coach to pick up the role when they feel like it. “Man United had a need there and then – they should have dealt with it in the summer rather than giving Ten Hag a new contract and wasting loads of money, they should have dealt with it in the summer. “Amorim’s job was to come in and make it better and to work with what he had and overcome some of the obstacles – not to turn it into a bigger problem. “They’ve gone to Lyon and got a result, who’s to take they’re not going to get a result on Thursday? I’d pick Man United to beat Lyon on Thursday. “Their performance in Lyon wasn’t bad. It was their game to win and they’re in an ideal position. “As for their league performances, the performance yesterday might have been because they’ve got their eye on something else.”
