Got to see the rant in person.
Bruce Springsteen made headlines recently when he went full 2003 Dixie Chicks, blasting Donald Trump and his administration during a concert in…Manchester, England.
The heartland rocker and his E Street Band recently kicked off their The Land of Hope & Dreams Tour, and in front of a full crowd of Brits, the rock star went on a rant against the current state of the America:
“In my home, the America I love, the America I’ve written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration…
The majority of our elected representatives have failed to protect the American people from the abuses of an unfit president and a rogue government. They have no concern or idea of what it means to be deeply America. The America that I’ve sung to you about for 50 years is real, and regardless of its faults, it’s a great country with great people. So we’ll survive this moment.”
Of course it’s no surprise that Springsteen isn’t a fan of Trump. He’s long been a supporter of the Democrat party, and endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election while calling Trump “the most dangerous candidate” of his lifetime.
The comments drew fire from hardcore Trump supporter Kid Rock, who called out Springsteen for his hypocrisy in criticizing the president overseas in front of a sympathetic audience while holding himself out to be a working-class warrior:
“Bruce Springsteen’s another one of these liberals who has mountains of money that so desperately wants to keep his good standing in the eyes of Hollywood and the elite, but plays like this working class guy. His politics are so a**-backwards. Just stay in Europe, Bruce. Have fun.”
And Trump himself even took aim at The Boss, calling him “dumb as a rock” and a “dried out prune of a rocker” in one of his infamous Truth Social posts:
“I see that Highly Overrated Bruce Springsteen goes to a Foreign Country to speak badly about the President of the United States. Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he’s not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK, who fervently supported Crooked Joe Biden, a mentally incompetent FOOL, and our WORST EVER President, who came close to destroying our Country.
If I wasn’t elected, it would have been GONE by now! Sleepy Joe didn’t have a clue as to what he was doing, but Springsteen is “dumb as a rock,” and couldn’t see what was going on, or could he (which is even worse!)? This dried out “prune” of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that’s just “standard fare.” Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!”
Well Eric Church just happened to be at the show that landed Springsteen in so much hot water, and was recently asked his opinion of The Boss’s comments.
Church admitted that he was standing side-stage and couldn’t really hear what Springsteen was saying at the time (though he later saw the comments like everybody else). And when asked his thoughts, he stayed away from giving his thoughts on what Springsteen said, instead choosing to endorse the rocker’s right to say it if that’s what he wants to say:
“Bruce, he’s earned the right to say and do what he wants. It could have been about hunger, it could have been apartheid. I respect the hell out of somebody having the balls to do something like that.
If you’re Bruce Springsteen, at 75 years old, if that’s what floats your boat, then you should do that. I was just ready to hear “Chimes of Freedom.””
And when asked whether he thought it would effect Springsteen’s career like it did the Dixie Chicks back in the day, Church drew a distinct difference between the two acts:
“I don’t know that it will. After all this time, he’s earned the stripes; he can say what he wants at this point. The Dixie Chick thing, that was a whole different time in their career. Bruce has been doing this a long time on every continent and every stage.”
Of course it was also a very different time in America. At the time The Chicks made their comments, America was largely united behind the president in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Now…well, we’re not so united, and half the people here in America no doubt agreed with Springsteen’s comments.
Elsewhere in the interview, Church was asked about his own politics, and like he’s always done, maintained that he doesn’t totally align with either political party:
“I’m not an ideologue. I have a problem with the political system where I believe things on both sides, but if I have to pick a party, it means that I can’t believe some of those things.
If I’m a Republican or I’m a Democrat, I have to be all Republican or all Democrat, and there’s no way those guys and girls believe that. There’s no f—ing way. So, the problem I have there is you have to pick a side and have to say the other side’s wrong because you’re under that flag. That’s total bulls–t.”
But he also says he doesn’t consider himself an independent either:
“I hate “independent,” because it sounds like I can’t make up my mind. I bristle at that. But if you look at how broad these issues and topics are, I think there’s a small percentage of Americans that truly believe in 100 percent of a party’s platform. Most Americans go back and forth. I change my mind all the d–n time.”
Sounds like we’re not going to be getting any political rants from Church any time soon…at least not in support of one party or the other.
