God definitely heard Phil coming.

The “Duck Commander” Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the Duck Dynasty family from Monroe, Louisiana, passed away back on May 25 after a battle with Alzheimer’s.

In a statement announcing his passing, the family said that they were celebrating with the knowledge that he had gone home to be with the Lord:

“We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord. He reminded us often of the words of Paul, “you do not grieve like those who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”

Thank you for the love and prays of so many whose lives have been impacted by his life saved by grace, by his bold faith, and by his desire to tell everyone who would listen the Good News of Jesus. We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again.”

Robertson was a man of deep faith, who never missed an opportunity to share the word of Jesus Christ. And he even told his family not to cry when he passed away:

“Dance, sing, but don’t cry when I die. When I die, say, ‘He made it because I watched him walk through the years, hurt back or no back.'”

The kind of faith that Phil had is something that I strive for in my own life, because of the comfort and peace it brings knowing without a shadow of a doubt what comes next after your time on earth is through.

Of course there’s no doubt that the family is hurting by the loss of their leader, the man who started Duck Commander back in 1972 and turned it into an empire. And to celebrate his life, the family recently held a small funeral service in their hometown for family and close friends of Phil.

The service featured speeches from several of his children, and afterwards the family shared a touching video from the funeral set to Zach Bryan’s “Pink Skies” that perfectly captured not only his memorial, but also his unwavering faith:

@officialduckcommander

Last week we had a small service for family and close friends to say see you later to our founder @officialphilrobertson. The funeral is now live on our channel and Phil Robertson’s channel on YouTube. We know Phil inspired so many folks so we wanted to share his service you all. We hope you enjoy this celebration of our Dad, Uncle, Brother, Papaw Phil, Friend, and the Duck Commander’s life on Earth. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭

They could have picked a better song for the memorial video. In fact, I’m pretty sure I even remember Phil calling his kids “yuppies” on the show when I used to watch it back in the day.

Phil’s family has opened up on the loss of their father, brother, grandfather and friend since his death, with his brother and Duck Dynasty co-star “Uncle Si” recalling how he was praying for God to call Phil home in his final days.

Phil had suffered a back injury, and his family had said that he was in rough shape before he passed away, not able to get out and enjoy his land as he always had or spend time in nature. And during an episode of their Unashamed podcast, Si shared memories of his older brother along with nephew Zach Dasher, Zach’s wife Jill, and longtime friend and employee Justin Martin, with Si recalling that he had been asking God to put an end to Phil’s earthly suffering:

“I’d been praying, ‘Lord, he’s ready. Call him home.'”

Martin admits that “Phil wasn’t Phil” at the end of his life, and Si agreed:

“His quality of life was not fair. He hurt his back doing something he shouldn’t have been doing. He should have let the younger men…but that’s my brother, he was doing it himself and hurt himself.”

Si also admits that he knew his brother had passed away before he even got the call:

“I knew before the phone call came. When I got up, I just felt totally alone. And that’s not true, I’m never alone…

But I felt total lonely. And then all the way to church, I sit down in the pew and they start preaching, and to quote a movie thing, ‘There’s been a huge, major disturbance in the force.’ Something ain’t right and I don’t feel right.

So then Phillip called and said, ‘Hey, look, Phil passed away at 5:00.’ I said, ‘Well, I already knew it.’ I’d already felt it.”

Phil was outspoken on his faith, and obviously that earned him his fair share of critics. But it also earned him the ultimate reward when he passed away. And there’s no doubt that God heard him coming.
