Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast has had some controversial episodes… but this newest one with Jason Aldean seems to be facing the most backlash.
The comedian and actor is a household name thanks to some of his roles in TV shows like Parenthood and movies such as Without a Paddle and CHIPS. That being said, in recent years, the biggest thing he’s known for his undoubtedly his podcast, Armchair Expert, which he started in 2018.
Shepard’s show mainly focuses in on celebrity interviews, and the 50-year-old has previously shared that he has a passion for speaking with others, learning more about them, and hearing stories that could potentially help others in similar circumstances. He’s been at it for over six years, and Dax rarely ever passes on the opportunity to talk with someone interesting.
He’s been on somewhat of a roll as of late with country music artists as guests. Just a few weeks ago, country music superstar Luke Combs sat down with Dax to talk about everything that’s going on in his life. And this week, on a special Labor Day drop, Dax Shepard had Jason Aldean on his podcast.
And people got really upset about it.
When I say “people,” I actually mean hardcore liberals who scoff at the idea of even breathing the same air as someone who voted for Donald Trump. Even Dax Shepard is often viewed as someone who leans more to the left, so it was a bit surprising to see that he had conservative country music star Jason Aldean on the program. There’s no question how Aldean and his wife, Brittany, feel politically, considering they’ve openly supported President Trump in the past. Jason performed at the inauguration, has golfed with the president… you could call them friends.
Of course, Aldean was unfairly labeled as “racist” and a “bigot,” and a “Nazi,” and every other commonly-used conservative pejorative when he released “Try That In A Small Town” in 2023. The track certainly has some political theming to it, but most agree that the controversy surrounding it was blown way out of proportion. It was talked about so much in the news cycle that it sent the song to No. 1 on the Billboard Charts. I’m sure Jason Aldean was real upset about that one.
It’s a shame that, following that song, a lot of people wrote Jason Aldean off, and he’ll probably forever be viewed that way by the progressive crowd. Although, I have to imagine he’s not losing too much sleep over it.
He had a pleasant conversation with Dak Shepard (as you can see and hear for yourself by pressing play), but a multitude of listeners have called out the podcast host for even having Aldean on his podcast. God forbid you ever have a conversation with anyone who thinks differently than you do…
The comment section of any video is often an ugly place, and that was certainly true with this one.
Dax was getting a lot of heat for having the country singer on his show, and many claimed that Shepard was promoting racism by having Aldean on. Some said he didn’t question Aldean hard enough on January 6th and his Trump alignment, while others said they were skipping out on the interview altogether:
“Dax likes ‘giving voice to the voiceless’ with their terrible opinions, yet doesn’t want to confront them or is afraid to give them space to discuss said terrible opinions.”
“Miss me on this one, be back next episode.”
“I listened to this full interview and while this singer seemed like a fine artist, I find it really disappointing that both the singer and Armchair would use their platform to promote racist ideas and behaviors.”
“I’m really sorry but I don’t see how it helps advance our understanding of people with political differences if during interviews they don’t have to answer for the racist and divisive things that they have said and done.”
“You guys LOVE to tout having difficult political conversations and yet you can’t be bothered to ask hard questions of someone like Jason.”
“This is extremely disappointing as someone who has been an armchair fan since the beginning. I wish I felt like you guys had a backbone when it comes to drawing the line at racist, but it seems we’re letting that one slide to hangout with your new Nashville friends.”
“Who else lost respect for Dax and Monica and armchair expert because of this?”
The Instagram comments weren’t much different…
“Aaaaaand I’m unsubscribing now
“Someone did not read the room and invited the wrong guest and grifted by not asking the hard questions.”
“You gonna give trump a platform next?”
“Oof. I haven’t liked every guest you’ve had on the show (which is fine, of course!) but this one is a real bummer.”
“Probably the worst person and artist you could’ve chosen. Yikes”
“If you’re doing this to bring in a bigger audience, then say goodbye to your current audience.”
“How disappointing. There are plenty other non-racist country music singers that you could have” interviewed.”
Safe to say that people are still upset about “Try That In A Small Town,” which he explains in great detail on the podcast…The post Dax Shepard Infuriates His Fans Inviting Conservative Country Star, Jason Aldean, On His “Armchair Expert” Podcast first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
