Bring it on.
Colter Wall appears to be in the studio cooking up something. Last night, August 27th, the Canadian native shared a snippet of a new song, moving away from the moaning of the steel guitar in his sad cowboy songs to showcase a more traditional country sound filled with piano licks and twangy guitar riffs. Behind this unreleased melody is an image of a Private Q multichannel headphone system, showing the plug-ins for all of his bandmates.
This means one thing… new music is on the way. With Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A being tagged in the post, this confirms the suspicion that the boys are cooking up something special.
In 2023, Wall released his last studio project, Little Songs, featuring songs straight from the heart. The Saskatchewan native shared he’d written the songs over the years before the release, and they reflect the feeling of home and his life as a cowboy:
“These songs were written over the last three years. I penned most of them from home, and I think the songs reflect that.”
The album has a stellar tracklist featuring songs like “Corralling the Blues,” “For A Long While,” “Standing Here,” and a cover of Hoyt Axton’s “Evangelina.”
However, since the release of that record, we have not received any new music from Colter Wall. But, given Colter Wall is a genuine cowpoke who enjoys creating music in the cattle “off season,” it’s not surprising to think that he got caught up in ranching, pushing music to the back burner for a bit. He even took some time for himself earlier this year, pushing some earlier 2025 tour dates to this fall for personal reasons:
“My reasons for doing so are quite personal and I’ve always valued my privacy despite the nature of my occupation. But I will simply say that some time off the road for reasons of mental and physical health are greatly needed.”
Last December, Colter Wall sat down with Dale Brisby on the Rodeo Time podcast and revealed that fans could expect a new record later in 2025.
“I don’t know when it will be out. Probably… I would guess, usually they want to shoot for or put that stuff out around July or August. Hopefully this (next) year we’ll get it mixed and out into the world. New record, all original songs (with) one cover on there.”
While it’s nearing the end of August now, I fear that we might be off schedule unless Wall pulls the surprise off of a lifetime with a surprise drop. However, given this cryptic post, I am feeling confident that we will receive some new music, whether a single or a full-length project, at some point this year.
At the time of the podcast, the “Honky Tonk Nighthawk” singer said that they had yet to name it, but he happily explained the inspiration behind the collection of music they put together:
“I don’t know what it’s called. I kind of just wanted to make a straight… it’s just a love letter to country music. Really it’s just a bunch of sad drinking songs mostly. I just wanted to make a record that sounded like Merle Haggard and the Strangers. Late 60’s into the early 70’s.
Honestly, to me, that’s where country music peaked. That’s my favorite stuff to listen to and I think that was the best band in country music. I wanted to make a record that reminded me of that. So that’s what we did… or tried to (do) anyways.”
You can hear the influence of Merle Haggard in the snippet that Wall shared on his social media, which makes me giddy to see what’s in store for this forthcoming project.
Fans quickly filled up the comments, noting that they, too, think this is a cryptic message for new music.
“This album is gonna feed me for years to come.”
“Are the people even ready? Sounds great. Can’t wait to hear the whole song. When does that happen?”
“Be still my heart!”
“Exactly what the world needs right now.”
“YESSSIR.”
“Sounding class, Colter! Getting some Merle Haggard and The Strangers vibes for sure.”
“How many miles from Music Row?”
“Can’t wait to buy this!”
“Can’t wait for this.”
“Oh my… here we go!!!!”
“YESSS! We’re getting another album.”
“Can we have a release date?”
“This sounds so insane! I’m beyond excited!”
“I’ve got tickets to see Colter this fall. Based on the new music, I’m really hoping he comes out on stage holding a Telecaster.”
Bring it on, Colter. We are ready for new music. The post Colter Wall Shares Cryptic Studio Post, & Fans Are Pumped New Music Is On The Way first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
