You either resign a fan of Buc-ee’s, or serve as mayor long enough to see yourself become a villain.

If you’ve ever been to a Buc-ee’s gas station, you likely either love it or hate it. The franchise – which specializes in clean bathrooms and delicious brisket – has slowly expanded outside of its point of origin in Texas.

I, for one, love the Buc-ee’s experience. Any other gas station visit pales in comparison to the massive, beaver-themed rest stop. I’d be over the moon to learn about a Buc-ee’s coming to my community, but that’s apparently not the case for everyone else.

Take Palmer Lake, Colorado, located between Denver and Colorado Springs, for example. Buc-ee’s was eying a location in the town that’s referred to as Monument Hill. Palmer Lake’s mayor, Glant Havenar, was all for bringing the massive gas station to the city. But some others in the community didn’t see eye to eye on the matter and protested the Buc-ee’s being built

However, a Colorado GOP staffer named Darcy Schoening who says she was “best friends” with the mayor insisted that the Buc-ee’s location should have been a no-brainer:

“I’m 100% in favor of Buc-ee’s. Palmer Lake needs the tax revenue. It’s a great project. The anti-growth mentality is not going to win in the Tri-Lakes area.”

Though it seems as though it should have been a win-win for the Palmer Lakes community, there were a lot of issues that revolved around land annexation meetings allegedly not allowing those who opposed the Buc-ee’s project to share their voice.

That prompted a lawsuit from a group called Integrity Matters. Kat Gayle, who acts as legal counsel for the nonprofit, said that they were very much worried about the silencing that occurred at public hearings:

“We were really concerned with open meetings laws violation. We started in the whole annexation game because the procedure itself was flawed.”

The Palmer Lake mayor continued to fight for the Buc-ee’s location to come to her town… that is until some text messages surfaced that her “best friend” made public.

Somewhere along the line, Schoening and Havenar had a falling out, and the Colorado GOP staffer posted text messages (that can be found in the lawsuit) that showed the mayor calling those who were against the Buc-ee’s:

-Terrorists

-Unfortunate looking creatures

-F***ing losers

-A cow

-Trash

Shortly after those messages were released, Mayor Havenar resigned.

And she’s standing by her decision to do so. Havenar told KRDO13 that despite only winning the mayoral election last November, she thought it was the right time to go, and had grown tired of people harassing and threatening her over the proposed annexation for the Buc-ee’s:

“I’m done. I’m complete. I feel really at peace with this. It’s time to do something creative. It’s time to spend time with my family. It’s time to spend time with my elderly parents.

I haven’t felt safe for quite some time. We’re having escorts out of our town council meetings, being police escort.

I traded in my car… my car was really lime green and was really noticeable. And I wasn’t being able to go out, go grocery shopping or go to places in the community without having somebody say, ‘This is where she is right now.'”

So now, Palmer Lake, Colorado is without a mayor, and will likely be without a Buc-ee’s as well. The lawsuit between Integrity Matters and members of the Palmer Lake government is still ongoing.
