Liverpool broke the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal rising to £116.5m.

And then they shattered their own record after bringing in striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle for £125m on deadline day.

But they were ultimately unable to get Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi over the line, which could see them dip into the free agency market.

While UK teams as well as those in France, Germany, Spain and Italy are unable to splash their cash until the window reopens in January, players that are not attached to a club are up for grabs all year round.

Victor Lindelof and Jamie Vardy were two notable free transfer deadline day movers having joined Aston Villa and Serie A club Cremonese respectively.

And there remains a plethora of talent that clubs across the globe don’t have to open their purse strings for.

Here talkSPORT.com has taken at look at the best players still searching for new teams.

Free agent goalkeepers

Those wishing to bring in an experienced back-up goalkeeper need to look no further than Fraser Forster.

The 37-year-old helped Tottenham Hotspur win the Europa League term – featuring in four matches in Europe’s second-tier tournament.

And having played second fiddle in his three seasons in north London, the former Celtic man may be more willing to sit on the bench than others.

Lukasz Fabianki is another option for clubs following his release at West Ham.

But at 40 years of age, it remains to be seen whether he will hang up his gloves or not.

Free agent defenders

Takehiro Tomiyasu is the standout free agent up for grabs having impressed during his four seasons at Arsenal.

The 26-year-old was a fan favourite at the Emirates following his move from Bologna in 2021, where he was used in both full-back positions.

But he was repeatedly impacted by injury setbacks, resulting in the Japan international featuring in just one appearance last season.

Tomiyasu and Arsenal agreed to part ways in July, but if the player manages to return to full fitness, he would be an astute piece of business for any club.

Another full-back that could catch teams attention is Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon has plenty of Premier League experience having featured for Tottenham, Manchester United and Brentford.

Aged 28, Reguilon still has more than enough to offer for potential suitors.

Moving onto central defenders and Kurt Zouma could be an interesting option for clubs.

The Frenchman has made 247 Premier League appearances having competed for Chelsea, Stoke, Everton and West Ham.

And while he spent last campaign on loan at Al Orabah in the Saudi Pro League, he remains a top quality defender.

Lastly, one surprising option for clubs could be Manchester City’s academy graduate Jason Denayer.

The 31-year-old has spent the last three seasons in the Middle East – first in the UAE with Shabeb Al Ahli before joining Saudi side Al Fateh in 2023.

A 35-cap Belgium international, Denayer has experience of British football having played for both Celtic and Sunderland.

Free agent midfielders

One player that has attracted a host of interest this summer is Josh Brownhill.

The 28-year-old banged in 18 goals and supplied six assists in 42 Championship matches last campaign to help Burnley achieve promotion back to the Premier League.

But he rejected a contract extension at Turf Moor in search of a new challenge after six seasons spent with the Clarets.

talkSPORT understands that Brownhill has snubbed move to both Wolves and Leicester.

It remains to be seen whether he will try his luck in Saudi Arabia amid interest from Al Shabab.

Another high-profile midfielder looking for the next chapter of their career is Christian Eriksen.

Released by United after three seasons, the 33-year-old chipped in with five goals and six assists in 35 games last term.

A fan favourite wherever he has been, the Denmark icon had been linked with a shock switch to ambitious second-tier side Wrexham this summer.

But it remains unclear where the former Spurs and Ajax maestro plans to continue his career.

One midfielder who would welcome a move back to the United Kingdom is former Arsenal and Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The 32-year-old recently had his contract ripped up by Besiktas having spent the previous two seasons in Turkey.

Racking up 50 appearances in all competitions, the ex-Southampton man has been linked with an emotional return to St Mary’s as well as a switch to Birmingham.

Dele Alli is another player that could be on his way back to Blighty after he mustered just one appearance for Como before his release on Monday – ten months before his deal was due to expire.

Prior to his brief spell in Italy, he spent the 2022/23 season at Besiktas on loan from Everton, who he managed just 13 appearances for between January 2022 to June 2024.

Meanwhile ex-Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech is on the lookout for a new club following his four-month spell in Qatar at Al-Duhail.

Ziyech, who scored 14 goals 107 matches for the Blues between 2020-2023, won three trophies with the west Londoners – including the Champions League.

He has went on to win two Super Lig titles and the Turlish Cup with Galatasaray, before swapping Europe for Asia.

Capable of playing as a No.10 and on the right wing, Ziyech could be seen as an attractive option for clubs.

Free agent forwards

West Ham icon Michail Antonio was released by the Hammers to bring an end to his ten-year association with the side.

It was only in December that the 35-year-old survived a near-fatal car crash that cut short his season.

But he returned to action in the summer to compete for Jamaica at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, before scoring twice in pre-season against Boreham Wood prior to his exit being confirmed.

Another striker that could be heading back to Britain is Kelechi Iheanacho.

The 28-year-old scored 21 goals for Man City after coming up through their ranks, before helping Leicester win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2021.

After seven years at the King Power Stadium, he made the move to Spain last summer to join Sevilla.

But the move failed to work out after he scored three goals from just 11 outings.

Released on deadline day, Iheanacho has already been heavily linked with a move to Scottish giants Celtic.

But the Hoops know they will have to act fast to secure his services with it believed that teams across Europe are keen on the Nigerian.
