Charley Crockett is tipping his hat to some greats that came before him with his new single “All Around Cowboy.”
The tune was by Jack Wesley Routh and Lendell J. Pollard, has been recorded over the years by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Chris LeDoux. Now, Charley Crockett is putting his spin on the tune with the help of the famed producer Shooter Jennings. When Crockett announced his upcoming record, Dollar A Day, from the new music he was teasing, it felt like there was a heavy influence of Waylon Jennings in the tune, and that influence is heard loud and clear on his rendition of “All Around Cowboy.”
Crockett, who is often outspoken about the game that big labels play, feels like he is singing “All Around Cowboy” to the music industry, making comparisons to the lyrics of getting back in the saddle to getting back on stage.
“I ain’t no ranch hand, but I am a modern day drifter, a traveling entertainer. I’ve said it before, but it’s a highly hazardous occupation. And just like the rodeo, the only way you make any money is if you stay on.”
He expands on this thought in another post, writing:
“Charley, why do you put out records so fast? Because the suits go on forever and prize fighters last a short time. Cattle kings own the spread. Cowboys only work it. Look around. Politicians take money from the rich and collect votes from the poor, while promising each protection from the other. That’s what I call a conflict of interest. They’re playing money guitar out here. Throw cash at a young artist and say, ‘Well, boy, hope you go viral!’ If I did it their way you’d never even have heard of me. Fenced in, sold off, and played out. All for a ‘Dollar A Day.'”
While I am sure that Crockett has felt down numerous times throughout his career, similar to the down-on-his-luck protagonist in the song, Crockett reminds himself that he is an “All Around Cowboy” through and through, knowing that he can rise to the top again.
The parallels between the literal and figurative translations captivate listeners as the moan of the steel guitar and his baritone vocals fill the ears. This tune is country to its core and honors the classic honky tonk sound of the genre.
“He remembers the thrill of bein’ a winner in the days of his first rodeo
But there’s somethin’ about winning that didn’t last forever
Maybe tomorrow things’ll get better if the devil lets loose of his soul
He’ll be be the all around cowboy again…”
Charley Crockett can do no wrong. Fire it up.
