Don’t drink the water…
NASCAR was in Pennsylvania this weekend, with the Cup Series hosting their only race this season at Pocono Raceway. But apparently a lot of them were still trying to recover from their trip south of the border.
During the race in Mexico City the weekend before, several drivers reported feeling sick both before and during the race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Race winner Shane Van Gisbergen even missed out on the team picture before the race, and during his interview with Amazon Prime after taking the checkered flag he was pretty graphic in describing what he had to overcome to win the race:
“I felt pretty rubbish today, leaking out both holes, that wasn’t fun.”
As it turns out though, apparently he wasn’t the only one dealing with some stomach issues both during and after the Mexico City race.
After yesterday’s race at Pocono, Ryan Blaney appeared dehydrated after the race, the result of his “cool shirt” failing early on in the 400-mile event. (A driver’s cool shirt basically pumps cold water through it to keep the driver comfortable, and when it fails, that water heats up if they’re not able to drain it, resulting in the shirt actually heating the driver even more than if he weren’t wearing it).
And though Blaney’s struggles appeared to be due to equipment failure, Brad Keselowski said that several other drivers were still sick and dehydrated after the Mexico City race:
“Observation from driver intros- Most all of the drivers are still sick and dehydrated from last week. I’ve never seen so many sick drivers before the start of the race.”
Yikes.
Of course part of the issue with the dehydration may have been from the elevation in Mexico City, which is over 7,000 ft above sea level and higher than anywhere else the Cup Series races, making it harder to stay hydrated. But of course we’ve all also heard the warnings about drinking the water in Mexico…and we also know what a diet of Mexican food can to do the stomach of somebody who’s not used to eating it on a regular basis.
After Keselowski revealed that drivers were still feeling the effects of their trip to Mexico, many people suggested that NASCAR should give teams an off week after the race next year if they choose to return to Mexico City in 2026, not only for logistical reasons but also so that drivers can recover.
Despite the lingering health issues, it seems like most everybody had a good time in the series’ first international race since 1958 – although the weekend wasn’t without controversy, after Carson Hocevar was fined for comments he made about Mexico City and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s spotter Tab Boyd was fired after tweeting his own criticism of his trip across the border.
Luckily Keselowski doesn’t have to worry about being fired for expressing his thoughts (because he owns his race team), but hopefully NASCAR doesn’t take issue with him pointing out that several drivers were still experiencing lingering health issues. The post Brad Keselowski Says “Most” NASCAR Drivers Were Still Sick & Dehydrated At Pocono From Last Weekend’s Mexico City Race first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
