Jerry Jones’ performance in season one of Landman stuck with Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm.
Fans of Taylor Sheridan’s latest hit TV show were stunned to see Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, make a cameo appearance in season one’s penultimate (9th) episode. Titled “WolfCamp,” the episode mostly focused on Jon Hamm’s character, M-Tex CEO Monty, dealing with heart issues in the hospital. Monty ended up receiving a surprising visit (at least surprising for viewers) from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who played himself in the show.
And boy oh boy did he lay down an impressive monologue:
“I made my mind up a long time ago that I was going to work with my kids. And they’re involved in everything. When I got the Cowboys, I got it so we could all work together. I thought I was doing it for them, but the one that got the most out of it was me.
You’re gonna be sitting here sometime in the future, laying here sometime in the future, and this room is gonna be full of your business associates, and the people you’ve worked with all your life. And more than likely, your children and family are gonna be there because they’re your children and your family.
But you could have them there because they’re the people you spent your life with… not just Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m pretty proud of them Cowboys, I’m pretty proud of the stuff we’ve done in oil and gas. It pales in comparison to how proud I am to have lived my life working with my kids.”
If only Jerry Jones could manage a football team as well as he could coach.
When you watch that clip, or if you watched it in real time when Landman was coming out, that was ironically one of the stand out performances of season one. Jerry Jones absolutely stole the show, and Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm would be the first to admit that.
The 69-year-old actor who brings Tommy Norris to life on screen had nothing but praise for Jerry Jones when he spoke about the scene at Newport Beach TV Fest’s Landman panel earlier in June. Thornton did point out that the Dallas Cowboys owner was really just telling his actual life story, but he and Hamm were still blown away by the perfectly delivered monologue:
“Jon Hamm and I looked at each other, and we were like, ‘What?’ I mean, it was insanely good. We got so wrapped up in it, and Jerry teared up. There was something in the script.
Jerry had told his life story to Taylor, so Taylor essentially said, ‘Tell your life story in the scene. I put some of what you told me in here. Go from that.’ So Jerry was basically just telling us his actual life story, and the way he bought the Cowboys, and the whole thing.”
And the whole thing came out phenomenally.
Not sure if Jerry Jones would ever find himself making another cameo in future seasons of Landman, but considering he knocked his first appearance out of the park (bad metaphor considering he’s a football GM), I’m sure Sheridan and the show would welcome him back with open arms. The post Billy Bob Thornton & Jon Hamm Couldn’t Believe How Good Jerry Jones Was In His ‘Landman’ Cameo: “Insanely Good” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
