As the summer transfer window approaches, Arsenal transfers are once again taking centre stage – and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres has emerged as a serious target. The Swedish striker’s numbers are turning heads across Europe, with many now calling him the best finisher in world football.
Over his last five league seasons, Gyökeres has scored 80 non-penalty goals from 501 shots, outperforming both his 69.14 non-penalty expected goals (npxG) and 77.15 npxG on target (npxGOT). That works out to an astonishing 1.16 goals per xG, over a large sample – a rate rarely seen even among elite forwards.
His consistency is key. According to FBref, Gyökeres has outperformed his xG in every single season across five years. This isn’t a one-season wonder; it’s a trend that showcases cold-blooded efficiency in front of goal.
For Mikel Arteta, who has built a technically gifted side capable of dominating games, adding a true finisher could be transformational. Neither Gabriel Jesus nor Kai Havertz has brought the consistent goal threat Arsenal crave – for all their qualities, their finishing is poor. Gyökeres offers power, pace, and clinical edge – making him the kind of crowning jewel that could tip the title race.
With Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard carving open defences, Arsenal need a striker who lives for the final touch. The Swedish international could be that man.
