Somewhere between his 847th airport lounge and what must have been his millionth drop, Armin van Buuren realized he'd been sleepwalking through superstardom.

"Around five years ago, I hit a point where I wasn’t truly happy, energized or present," says the Dutch electronic music icon. "I had been running on autopilot for years, constantly chasing the next thing. I felt like I was drifting, and I needed to wake up."

We now have Breathe, van Buuren's sprawling new album, which features an astonishing 51 tracks. The producer split his ninth studio effort into Breathe In (released last year) and Breathe Out (arriving now), ultimately creating the "most creatively free and inspired" music of his career, according to a press release issued by his label, Armada.

The dual-album structure mirrors how healing happens in phases, with breathing in representing acceptance and breathing out symbolizing release from outdated versions of ourselves.

"Realizing how easily this can happen, how it can affect both your personal life and career, and how hard it is to control, I want to help normalize conversations around mental health, especially in this industry," he added. "It’s something I’ve wrestled with for a long time, and I’ve come to see that vulnerability can be a real strength."

The transformation story reads like every wellness influencer's—cringe—"journey," but something feels distinctly authentic about van Buuren's experience. The sheer audacity of releasing over 50 songs with titles like "When We Come Alive" and "God Is In The Soundwaves" suggests someone who experienced a truly profound epiphany.

Ultimately, the album treats mindfulness not as spiritual luxury but as professional necessity, recognizing that sustainable creativity requires sustainable creators.

"I've never felt this clear and focused in the studio," he gushed. "Taking care of myself, mentally and physically, gave me the headspace to experiment, to collaborate without pressure, and to really enjoy the process again."
