Just beautiful.
This weekend, Willie Nelson continued on his 2025 Outlaw Music Festival Tour in with a stop in his home state of Texas with a show at Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas following his annual Fourth of July show on Friday in Austin.
Of course, Willie’s Family Band joined him onstage and helped play through many of his hits, including his son Lukas, who just put out his debut solo album American Romance… and yes, I will once again tell you to go check that out if you haven’t yet, because it’s easily one of my top albums of the year.
At 92 years old, you obviously don’t need me to tell you how impressive it is that the red headed stranger continues to tour and play shows like he does. It’s obviously a bit more slowed down than his prime years, but the fact that he can still get out there and do it night after night is just incredible. He also continues to release new albums, most recently putting out his 77th solo studio album Oh What a Beautiful World earlier this year.
And during the Dallas show, since Lukas was onstage with his dad, he and Willie performed a duet of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe,” which was originally released in 2009 as the second single from the band’s ninth studio album, Backspacer. A solo write by frontman Eddie Vedder, it peaked at #6 on the U.S. Billboard Alternative chart, which makes it the band’s highest-charting follow-up single since “Wishlist” in 1998.
Willie and Lukas initially recorded their duet of it in 2012 for Willie’s Heroes album, and it has been one of my all-time favorites ever since. And actually, on an old episode of Willie’s Roadhouse, Vedder likened their rendition to:
“Smoking a great joint without all the coughing or the smoke.”
He also went so far as to say that having them record his song was:
“Best contribution to music so far.”
While Willie isn’t able to quite belt it out the way he used to, it was a special moment seeing him up there with his son singing such a special song at this point in his life, and I’m sure it means the world to him to continue doing what he loves more than anything with his family.
So many iconic artists could only hope to be able to continue to performing into their 90’s… I keep seeing videos from Ozzy Osbourne’s final live show for 40000 fans in Birmingham, England, on Saturday, which only highlights how rare it is that Willie is on a full-blown, very extensive tour, still playing for fans all over the country with no real plans of slowing that down at least this year and possibly next year too.
You just love to see it… I can never get enough of this:
If you’ve never heard the Willie/Lukas original, do yourself a huge favor and check it out here:
