There are moments that you capture, meant to be treasured for personal keeping. And there are some that are intended to be enjoyed in private, then later shared with the world. This moment feels like one of those videos that was meant to be shared once the time was right, and wow, is it special to see something like this.

Whenever an artist shows up unexpectedly, it always leads to a cherishable moment. And when an artist appears in an unexpected way, and it’s not publicized, it makes it even more meaningful.

One of Tyler Childers‘ fans recently shared a moment when Tyler Childers showed up as an artist and friend for a Kentucky family. @hadleybtdunn on TikTok posted a video from roughly three years ago, in which she performed “Follow You To Virgie” at her grandmother’s funeral. In the comment section, the creator shared that her grandmother was from Virgie, Kentucky, the rural city in Eastern Kentucky that Childers references in the famed tune.

The song was part of his Live On Red Barn Radio performances from 2013 and 2014; however, the recordings were later re-released as a complete EP, Live On Red Barn Radio I & II, in 2018. The beloved song was penned for Tyler Childers’ friend, Cody, after he lost his grandmother. Cody’s grandmother let all of their friends come over to her house to play music, hang out, and escape from reality after school. One day, after all these boys went their separate ways, he received a call from Cody’s girlfriend, sharing the news that his grandmother had passed away. This inspired Childers to write a heartfelt song about the times they spent with this wise woman and how she would be watching over Cody from heaven.

While there is no explanation from the creator of how Childers was persuaded to appear at her grandmother’s funeral, or if there is some family connection, given that she’s from the same town referenced in the song. In the comments section, the creator notes that he performed for free, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from Tyler. Regardless, no explanation is needed to enjoy the beauty of this performance.

Childers stands in the center of the room, his acoustic guitar in hand, with another man supporting him on the keys, standing across from him. Wearing a suit, Childers belts out the words to the tender song, and you can hear folks sniffling around the room as he performs.

Back before these calloused hands and all this work
We used to sit up at the flats
Actin’ like we’d live forever
Gettin’ high and skippin’ class

Yeah, I reckon we were heathens
But in her eyes we were saints
Now you’re callin’ all the boys home
‘Cause heaven’s angels carried her away

So I will follow you to Virgie
Although it hurts me so
To lay to rest this mountain beauty
That the Lord’s called home
And I can see her up in glory
I can see her through the pines…”
