Stu and the boys are headed back to the studio.

Last week, the great Sturgill Simpson, AKA Johnny Blue Skies, took the Why Not? Tour to the great state of North Carolina to perform at the ExploreAsheville.com Arena in Asheville. And with just a handful of dates left on the schedule, Stu confessed that it was probably about time to get back in the studio.

But not before he revealed that he’s never been happier on stage than he has been during this tour:

“We are, after tonight, 3 shows away from the end of a year long tour. It’s been the best time I’ve ever had on stage, the best music, the best band I’ve ever got to play with.

But after that, it’s safe to say we’ve done two complete laps around the United States and all over Europe, it’s probably time to get in the studio and make some new music… and then turn around and do it all over again:

(Second slide):

Let’s go!

Of course their last record, Passage du Desir, was recorded under the moniker Johnny Blue Skies so you have to assume this one will follow suit, but regardless, it’s great to see Stu loving life and making music again. Stu was very candid about feeling pretty lost and hopeless after his vocal chord surgery, and in the midst of his depression, he told his wife that he needed to spend time traveling to get his head right, and that’s exactly what he did.

He tells GQ:

“The endeavors of man just seemed pointless, to put it lightly.” Stuck at home and unable to speak, much less sing, he knew he wasn’t in the proper setting to get his head right. “So I just told my wife, ‘I gotta go, because I’m having some dark ideas here.”

He spent a lot of time in Paris, some time in Thailand, and he emerged a new man. But all of that to say, it’s absolutely fantastic to see him having the time of his life on stage again. I mean, he’s explicitly says that he’s never had more fun on stage, but if you’ve seen him this year, or go see him next year, you can just tell… Stu is on another level right now. And it’s GREAT for all of us.

Here’s another clip from that show featuring “Ain’t All Flowers,” a cover of Eddie Murphy’s “Party All The Time,” and “Best Clockmaker on Mars.”
