You’ve heard of Stephen A. Smith the sports personality… but what about Stephen A. Smith the politician?
Let me take that a step further. Does President Stephen A. Smith have a nice ring to it? That’s right. ESPN analyst, podcast host and debate master Stephen A. Smith is seriously considering a potential presidential run. For the longest time – and despite being courted by politicians to consider running – Smith has insisted that he enjoys the line of work he is in (yelling about sports) too much to give it up.
But things have apparently changed.
Polls have long shown that Stephen A. Smith could be competitive as Democratic presidential nominee. That being said, those numbers have never been enough to convince one of the faces of ESPN to leave his network job to pursue a career in politics. He’s been very outspoken about that, as rumors have tried to connect him with a potential presidential run.
Stephen A. has always denied that speculation… that is until he was asked about his political aspirations during a NAB Show in Las Vegas back in April. It was there that he confirmed that he won’t rule out a presidential run in 2028, though he says it’ll be a decision that he makes in late 2026 or 2027.
Only time will tell if Stephen A. actually make the jump in full-fledged politics. At the very least, he’s already ventured into the political commentary sphere, and has been very active in having conversations and discourse about the current political state of the United States. He’s joined both Fox News and CNN on various occasions, and most recently sat down with The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart.
And I couldn’t help but notice that Stephen A. Smith said some things on Jon Stewart’s Comedy Central program (it’s his at least once a week) that caused the political commentator to be taken back. One of those moments was when Smith insisted that the Democrats lost the 2024 Presidential Election more than the Republicans won it:
“I’m a centrist at heart. I’ve always voted Democrat. But there’s a lot of things that I think can be done differently. I thought the left blew this election more so than Trump winning it. The left definitely blew it. I thought the progressive left, the extreme left really, really ruined the election for the Democrats.”
As Stephen A. Smith was rolling through that political take – much like he does with his sports takes – Jon Stewart was almost left speechless. The TV host managed to let out these two words (the second one could be classified better as a disbelief-induced sound) as a response to Smith saying the “extreme left” lost the election:
“Really… Whaaaa?”
Hey… if Stephen A. Smith can leave Jon Stewart – a man who has testified in front of Congress on behalf of veterans – in a mind pretzel like that, maybe he does have what it takes to be a politician. It’s Stewart’s position that the Progressives of the Democratic party are the only ones who really stand for anything and the more moderate Democrats in the party are just kind of… there. But Stephen A. Smith argued that the Progressive issues like transgenderism killed the party and Jon countered by saying that it is a “hyperbolic” topic and that most Progressives just want good healthcare. Of course, it’s all a matter of perception as Stephen A pointed out, saying that Republicans have done a good job of branding that as a core issue for Democrats, whether it is or not.
The popular sports host doubled down on his take, even as Jon Stewart was astonished by what he had just heard:
“It’s true. And I think that because that happened, it positioned him to get away with a lot of things. His position on immigration has been well known. He let you know what he was going to do. He doesn’t care.
And here’s the thing about it is don’t be surprised when you see him and you are thinking about pettiness or you’re thinking about vengeance or whatever. He’s viewing it as, ‘They tried to put me in prison. They tried to put me behind bars for the rest of my life. I’m gonna get them all.'”
All in all, it’s honestly a very interesting and healthy conversation that keeps both Stephen A. Smith and Jon Stewart on their toes… which probably means it’s worth your time.
