Shit is getting wild out there, folks. It’s downright scary and like many of you, I worry where it’s all going. If you’re heading out to the ‘No Kings’ protests this weekend, please be safe. Don’t do anything stupid and remain peaceful. Don’t bring your cellphone. Do anything you can to make sure you get home safe. You’re going to want to be able to enjoy all of the new metal coming out for the rest of your life. I just hope we all get to do it as a free people.
Byzantine
Harbingers (Metal Blade Records)
For the first time, Byzantine’s operating as a five-piece and Harbingers is the coming out party for this new lineup. Considered part of that cadre of New Wave of American Heavy Metal bands from the early 2000s, the band continues to pump out heavy riffs and adhere to the groove-laden sound that fans continue to lap up.

Fallujah
Xenotaph (Nuclear Blast)
We ran a review of this bad boy yesterday and I think I’ll let my buddy Jordan Blum tell you everything you need to know about this one. “Xenotaph is a tremendous accomplishment that further validates Fallujah as a dominant force in the realm of progressive/technical death metal.” It’s good. Go listen to it.

Metallica
Load (Remastered) (Blackened Recordings)
Alright, stop. I don’t want to hear your fuckin’ bellyaching. Load would have been lauded as a kick ass record if anyone else wrote it. Yet just because Metallica’s name is on it, it’s constantly maligned by the fans. I mean, we all know no one hates Metallica more than Metallica fans, but come on. This one — and ReLoad, come fight me Greg Kennelty — is good and with the remastered edition now out, you can give it another listen and realize that I’ve been right all along.

Queens Of The Stone Age
Alive In The Catacombs (Matador Records)
This EP of Queens Of The Stone Age performing various tracks in the catacombs of Paris is incredibly original. At times haunting in its execution and sound production, it strips down all the bombast and lays bare the bones of Josh Homme and the boys’ sound. It’s not a long listen, but if you’re a fan of the band’s discography over the years, you’re going to find something to love about this release.

Row Of Ashes
Tide Into Ruin (Road To Masochist)
This post-hardcore outfit returns with their fourth full-length effort and while you may not have heard of them, this is absolutely worth checking out. Mixing post-hardcore with elements of noise and sludge, this band doesn’t mind wallowing in the muck and mire to get its point across. And that point is just unhinged and haunting enough to make you wonder how they manage to keep it all together.
