Players with the most Premier League relegations: Aaron Ramsdale set to join unwanted club with third drop

Aaron Ramsdale is, unfortunately, more than familiar with the feeling of relegation from the Premier League. And the Southampton goalkeeper could be set for another one on Sunday, with the Saints needing a win to delay the inevitable. At just 26 years old, he will experience his third relegation from the top flight to the Championship with a third different club. He went down with Bournemouth before joining Sheffield United and getting relegated with the Blades, too. Ramsdale would go on to join Arsenal in 2021, and he’d be their No.1 shot-stopper until David Raya arrived. That led to a departure to Southampton last summer, which is now going to lead to another drop to the second tier. It will put him among an unwanted group of players who have been relegated from the Premier League three times. Hreidarsson’s feat is extra impressive when you consider he’s been relegated five times, all at five different clubs. His first came at Palace in 1998 before he went down with Wimbledon, Ipswich, Charlton and finally, Pompey in 2010. For Blake, his five relegations came for Sheffield United, Bolton twice, Blackburn and Wolves. He set the record for the most ever relegations at the time before Hreidarsson levelled that – with it still standing to this day. Ramsdale could be closing in on joining this list Former England goalkeeper Rob Green was relegated four times in his career, with the last two coming at Queens Park Rangers following poor seasons with Norwich and West Ham. Sebastain Bassong has also gone down four times, with the most recent of those coming twice for Norwich in 2014 and 2016. Nigel Quashie makes the list too, going down with Southampton in 2005 before doing so again with West Brom in 2006. Ex-striker Marcus Bent played for 18 clubs throughout his career, so it’s the law of averages that he’d have experienced some relegations. After going down alongside Hreidarsson in Crystal Palace’s 1998 team, he went on to get relegated with Ipswich, Leicester and Charlton. And finally, the first of Marc Edworthy’s four came in that same Palace side, proving that it may well have been a curse.
