President Trump pushing to bring back something from cancellation? That’s definitely something that’s on brand for the POTUS.
There’s no doubt that tetro and vintage apparel are in right now, and throwback uniforms and logos are often used by professional and college teams alike. People long for nostalgia, and to be perfectly honest, a lot of the older logos and imaging are simply better than the sleek, modern day ones we have grown accustomed to.
However, it can get a little problematic when you start talking about a logo, or brand, that has effectively been “cancelled.” Back in 2020, the franchise known as the Washington Redskins kneeled to the public pressure and retired the “Redskins” name, opting to switch to the creatively coined “Washington Football Team.”
The original name that the team had gone by from 1937 to 2020 had long been criticized for its potentially controversial nature, and when all of the other “canceling” went down back in 2020, the Redskins went along with it. Then after two years as a generically named team, the football team in the country’s capitol changed their name to the Commanders, and that has since stuck.
Though it’s been a number of years since the cancellation and introduction to the replacement “Football Team” and “Commanders” monikers, there are still mixed feelings about the name change. One person that evidently remains strongly against it? That’s be the President of the United States.
Donald Trump was asked about the name change recently, and here’s what he had to say on the matter:
“I wouldn’t have changed the name, but that’s their … it just doesn’t have the same. It doesn’t have the same ring to me, but you know winning could make everything sound good. So, if they win all of a sudden, the Commanders sounds good, but I wouldn’t have changed the name.”
Love that he’s always open to entertaining the “fun” questions.
He’s not alone in feeling that the Washington football team (referring to them generically, not their actual name for those weird couple of years) should have never moved away from the Redskins branding. When all of the “cancellation” was happening, the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) put together quite the movement to reinstate the Redskins name, and had this to say to those who were worried about it being offensive to Native Americans:
“We acknowledge the concerns surrounding cultural sensitivity and the need to foster inclusivity. However, we firmly believe that there are alternative ways to honor and respect Native American heritage without erasing it.
By reclaiming the Redskins name, we have the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue, educational initiatives, and collaborations with Native American communities. Together, we can promote cultural appreciation, address misconceptions, and work towards a more inclusive society.”
And this week, following President Trump’s remarks on the matter, the Native American Guardians Association’s vice president, Frank Black Cloud, provided this statement to TMZ.
Much as the organization felt a number of years ago when the Washington team was renamed, NAGA still feels as though the Redskins would be the appropriate name for the franchise, and commended Donald Trump for standing up for them:
“President Trump’s comments validate what Indian Country has been saying for years. The old name was never a slur, but a symbol of strength, honor, and pride for American Indian people.
“>President Trump is standing with history, with truth, and with American Indian voices that have been silenced for far too long. This is not about nostalgia – it’s about justice.”
All in all, the Native American Guardians Association pushing for the return of the controversial name seems like it would be a good signifier that Washington could go back if they wanted to. President Trump voicing his support for the Commanders to revert back to the Redskins doesn’t hurt either.
But for those still holding out hope, sources from the Washington Commanders told TMZ that changing the name back to the Redskins is completely off the table. So all of the effort – and the talk from Trump – could be for nothing. The post Native American Organization Backs President Trump’s Call For The Washington Commanders To Change Their Name Back To The Redskins first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
