Matthew McConaughey is a man that wears many hats.

Beloved and acclaimed actor in movies and TV? Check. Best selling author? Yep. Entrepreneur and bongo-playing enthusiast? Both of those check out. But the one endeavor that’s been the most interesting to see McConaughey venture into in recent years is his “Minister of Culture” position with the Texas Longhorns.

What does that title entail? A number of things really. But mainly, it just allows for McConaughey to be enmeshed with the university that he himself graduated from in 1993. Though he helps with a number of different programs and teams at Texas, there’s no doubt at all that he loves to help out the Longhorns football program the most.

This morning, he put out a video message on his social media page promoting the upcoming No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns season, who kick things off with a matchup against No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday:

“Ding ding, we’re back in the ring. College football is back. Here we go. It’s that time of year. Man I’m really excited about the entire season, but I’m really excited about this University of Texas Longhorn football team. This team has real confident and quiet belief in themselves. I believe they’re on a mission.”

I’ll definitely be using, “Ding ding, we’re back in the ring” every time I enter into my local sports bar.

McConaughey went on to deliver a monologue (he’s pretty great at those, eh?) that was specific to the Texas team, but it’ll get any college football fan ready for the season to really get rolling. The 55-year-old actor really honed in on the Longhorns’ ranking, and that it won’t distract them from reaching their goals or potential:

“All the hype in the number one ranking is neither validation nor a curse to this team. They’re above and beyond that, before any of us said they were ‘number one’ for preseason rankings. And I think that’s what any great championship team’s got to have. They’ve got to have their own reason and mission that they’re on.”

And the Minister of Culture at Texas landed the conversation by saying that all bandwagon fans and Longhorns haters are welcome. Why? McConaughey believes that this team is a team of destiny, and that they won’t care at all about the noise that surrounds the program:

“This team couldn’t give a damn about all of that bulls**t. They’ve got a mission they’re on. They believe it. They’re ready to earn it. That’s what I love about the makeup of this team. Head, heart, soul aligned in the belief that it’s theirs to go get.”

So do I lock in Texas to win the national championship? Or what?

And hey, while we’re speaking Matthew McConaughey and football, I’ve got to mention that the actor, author and professional-Texas-hype-man has a new series in the works that focuses on football. He and Cole Hauser have signed on as executive producers of a show that’s currently untitled, and they are set to play brothers in the football drama. It’s not known if it will be set in the college or professional football world, but I’m sure that will be revealed in due time.

The other exciting name attached to the project? Nic Pizzolatto, who happens to be the creator of True Detective. Pairing Pizzolatto’s vision with McConaughey’s performance in that first season of True Detective was absolute gold, so there’s no doubt that them working in tandem once more will create more memorable, TV moments. That first season of the anthology series with McConaughey and Woody Harrelson was pure cinema, and I’ve got a feeling that Hauser and McConaughey can pull off something similar.

This football drama idea is one that Hauser and McConaughey have reportedly kicked around for quite some time. They’ve been friends for over two decades, and it’s believed this project was birthed through their friendship and mutual appreciation for the sport of football. Based upon the alleged “competitiveness” to obtain the rights to the project, sports fans and those like dramas could be in for a real treat when the show hits Netflix.

And knowing Matthew McConaughey’s love for football, and his experience as Texas’ “Minister of Culture,” I’m sure the show will come together quite nicely. The post Matthew McConaughey Delivers Texas Football Hype Video That’ll Get Any College Football Fan Fired Up For The Season first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
