Matthew McConaughey offering up some comforting words during this trying time.
The 55-year-old actor, minister of culture, and author is currently doing media spots to promote his new book Poems & Prayers. It’s McConaughey’s follow up to his uberly popular and best seller Greenlights, which he released in late 2020. While that book was more anecdotal, this new one is described to be a “faith-filled” collection of poetry and written prayer.
He’s done more than a couple of interviews in the past week, one being The Joe Rogan Experience, where he suggested that the 1o Commandments be put up in every classroom across the country. And this morning, McConaughey hopped on Fox New’s Fox & Friends to help promote his new book and talk about his faith.
It was during the conservation that Matthew was asked about his faith, and how he’s allowed for God to steer the way in certain aspects of his life. That prompted McConaughey to deliver a message that could certainly be categorized as useful in this current societal climate:
“When we’re in the middle of the chaos, we feel like it’s on us and on us only and how in the heaven or hell are we going to get out of it? Faith being something that we can on our own, in 4 a.m. solitude with ourselves, as well as in the masses in the arena of millions of people. Faith is something, a truth, that stability, that where our head and heart, connected with our spirit, where we can feel stable and trust ourselves.
Trust that sometimes, this too shall pass. Trust that I’m playing the longer game. We’re in the mortal race. This is small stuff, this inconvenience that I’m in right now. Believing in that and understanding that helps us get through a lot of crises. It’s not tom foolery. It’s not foolish optimism. It’s real.”
Amen to that.
If there’s more where that came from in his new book, Poems & Prayers, we’d probably all be better off reading it. As always, Matthew McConaughey was as smooth and philosophical as they come in this short Fox News interview, and he landed the conservation by answering another question: How can people handle tough situations that they might be in?
“Sometimes I think we need to be a little easier on ourselves. And sometimes we need to be harder on ourselves. Sometimes we’ve got to go, ‘I’m tired of forgiving you McConaughey, it’s the 14th time I’ve forgiven you for the same damn thing. You’re a repeat offender. How many times are we gonna go back and say forgive me?’
I believe God wants us to have our hands on the wheel. We cannot rely on fate alone. It is also free will. Our choice. And those are not two opposite things. I believe that’s where faith and religion lives… it is a mix of fate and free will.”
