Seeing Tyler Childers‘ name on my New Music Friday playlist in any capacity is a sign that it’s a week full of good releases.
And for anyone who did not read the headline before clicking on this article, I hate to burst your bubble, but no, Tyler Childers did not put out a surprise single after the release of his latest studio project, Snipe Hunter. HOWEVER, what we were gifted with might be better.
Today, Margo Price released her new record Hard Headed Woman, which is the first record that Price has recorded in the city she’s called home for the last 20 years: Nashville. Recorded at RCA Studio A, Hard Headed Woman features witty lyrics, authentic songwriting from Price and her team of songwriters, and the sense that she’s never felt more like herself as an artist, unapologetically doubling down on her views and thoughts. Sonically, the record features classic country compositions, with messages that are timeless yet urgent, needing to be heard by today’s country listener.
The record also features some stellar collaborations, including contributions from Jesse Welles, Kris Kristofferson, and Rodney Crowell, as well as a Waylon Jennings song that his widow, Jessi Colter, encouraged her to sing.
But one of the early standouts on Hard Headed Woman is her collaboration with Tyler Childers.
Price enlisted Childers for a melancholy duet, “Love Me Like You Used To Do.” The heartbreakingly beautiful ballad showcases a classic country sound, with both artists singing the heartbreaking yet loving lyrics.
As the steel guitar moans, Price opens the song as a heartbroken woman wanting to reconnect with her lover. The space put between them due to hardships, lies, and more has put strain on their partnership (enter the heartbreaking part of the tune), and all the woman wants to do is to put those feelings aside and be loved like she was when they first got together. During the second verse, Childers highlights the man’s perspective as he feels the same, wanting to set aside all their differences and reconnect as lovers.
The song is heartbreaking yet loving because to have a successful, long-term relationship, you must forgive and move on from hardships, finding a way to keep the spark alive.
In the song’s final verse, Price and Childers harmonize as they conclude that they are far from perfect people, but recognize that they are perfect for each other and need to return to the basics, loving each other as they once did.
“We’ve got old skeletons
Secrets and baggage
And deceit and half-truths and lies
All kinds of trust issues
Empty boxes of tissues
And we won’t see through each other’s eyes
Using drugs for the masses
Rose-colored glasses
‘Til we can’t even see what is true
Throw it all on the bonfire
And burn it all down
And love me like you used to do
Oh, and love me like you used to do
Oh, and love me like you used to do”
Tyler Childers and Margo Price created pure magic with this duet. Sad country songs make me oh so happy, and “Love Me Like You Used To Do” is a prime example of that.
Turn it all the way up.
