Now this is something I can get behind.

We are now well into July and in the throes of festival season, a highly anticipated and at times grueling portion of the calendar in which every weekend seems to have a country music festival with a stacked lineup somewhere in the country. The sheer number of festivals on the summer circuit boasting the scene’s top names is enough to send country music fans into a headspin, but for better or worse, travel is often a factor that limits the realistic options for everyone. Nevertheless, there’s bound to be some worthwhile festivals within driving distance, no matter where you reside.

And if you live in the Carolinas, or just the Southeast for that matter, you might want to go ahead and make plans to be in North Charleston, SC towards the end of August for Marcus King Band’s Family Reunion. Taking place at the Firefly Distillery on August 23 and 24, the lineup for Marcus King’s annual festival is highlighted by some awesome artists like King, Jamey Johnson, Stephen Wilson Jr., Molly Tuttle, and more. But the real reason you don’t want to miss it this year, especially if you consider yourself a country music enthusiast, is the Marcus King & Friends set on Saturday August 23.

A staple of the event, this set is intended to mimic the organic jam session that King recalls transpiring during family reunions growing up, and as he just recently announced, the theme this year is an all-timer. Honky Tonk Classics.

Joining King for the special set are Jamey Johnson and Molly Tuttle, as well as Kendall Marvell, Jade Bird, Hiss Golden Messenger, Leah Blevins, Pearl, Tanner Adell, and Billy Contreras. While we’ll have to wait an see just what honky tonk classics they’ll play, I’m imagining these talented artists swapping songs by Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, George Strait, and so many other classics by the genre’s all time greats.

And in anticipation of it all, I dug up a few videos of some of these artists covering classics that prove just how incredible this set is going to be.

Marcus King – “Workin’ Man’s Blues” by Merle Haggard

Jamey Johnson – “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” by Merle Haggard

The Honky Tonk Classics set is enough to get me to Marcus King’s Family Reunion in its own right, but this stacked lineup ensures a full weekend of great tunes. Check out the lineup here:

Saturday August 23rd:

Jamey Johnson, Molly Tuttle, Marcus King & Friends, Leah Blevins, Pearl

Sunday August 24th:

Marcus King Band, Stephen Wilson Jr., Hiss Golden Messenger, Joshua Ray Walker, Henry’s Pocket
