Ah, the majestic bison.
A symbol of American power and strength, synonymous with the Western Frontier, these beasts are the largest land animals in the Western Hemisphere.
But there are actually two distinct species of American bison in North America, and while their differences are relatively minimal to the untrained eye, there are quite a few differences that are easy to distinguish once you know what you’re looking for.
Types Of Bison
The Plains Bison is what you find in the United States, and while they once roamed all over the western portion of the country, these days you can mostly find them in places like Yellowstone and Gran Teton National Park, as well as other reserves and tribal lands. The Wood Bison, on the other hand, is more commonly found in the boreal forests of northwestern Canada, including provinces like British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon, and Northwest Territories. Wood Bison are actually larger than the Plains Bison, which a much more prominent hump at the shoulders. They also tend to be a bit darker, with shaggier hair on the head and belly. They also have longer, hairier tails when compared to the Plains Bison.
But any bison, doesn’t matter the species, the gender, the age, is going to be a formidable opponent for your family pet… even a pit bull. These aren’t just ordinary animals — they’re giants.
Bison Size
A mature bull bison (male) can weigh up to 2,000 pounds — roughly the size of a compact car — and stand 6 feet tall at the shoulder. Females, or cows, are smaller but still impressive, usually weighing around 1,000 pounds. Despite their bulk, they’re surprisingly agile and can run up to 35 miles per hour, easily outrunning a person.
And this pit bull named Mac came face to face with one quite a few years ago, in a viral video that is making the rounds on the internet. The video from 2014 has gone viral once again, serving as a reminder that nature doesn’t play games… and also that dad seems to have issues multi-tasking. Which dad doesn’t though?
Coming to us from British Columbia, this family was making the drive north to the Yukon, when they came across a few Wood Bison on the side of the road. Naturally, they pulled over to witness these glorious creatures in action, but one member of the family got a little too excited. Mac somehow escapes the car and goes charging for the bison, who without much effort at all, truck sticks him into the air with a quick and easy flick of the head. He barely even moved and it was enough for Mac to catch some air.
Luckily, the dog ran off and was more or less fine, but it could’ve been much worse. I mean, good thing they didn’t pull over to observe a mama grizzly bear and her cubs. Mac would’ve turned into dinner real quick.
But of course, the best part of the entire video is the commentary from mom and dad:
“JESUS CHRIST, RICHARD!”
C’mon, Richard… head on a swivel when you’re in the Canadian wilderness.
The woman who took the video all those years ago, Miranda, recently shared some more information about it, after it went extremely viral the first time (thanks in part to us here at Whiskey Riff).
In an effort to set the record straight, plus reveal that the dog was essentially unharmed, she said the following:
“There’s thousands of people making assumptions and are extremely upset with this video. We live in a rural community in Northern British Columbia and we call the “bison” buffalo lol. My parents and siblings were travelling up North to the Yukon. We pulled over and my 14 year old brother was recording the buffalo because they had just been fighting.
As we were watching the buffalo, our dog Mac jumped out of the truck and went after the buffalo. Richard (my dad) tried calling him back and it is my mom who you could hear yelling at my dad. Mac had a little cut under his chin but was ok and we left.”
Just some good old fashioned Canadian family fun… gotta love it.
