Was Jamey Johnson actually considering Toby Keith’s 365 concert idea?
The great Jamey Johnson stopped by the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to talk about his time in the Marines, listening to contemporary country music and how he enjoys artists like Morgan Wallen, working from the Cash cabin to create his new album Midnight Gasoline, how he wrote “What A View,” meeting his now-wife and proposing the second day he knew her, and much more.
But the one thing we wanted to touch base on with Johnson was his association with a certified, from-the-mind-of-Toby-Keith idea. Jamey Johnson shared in an interview early this summer that Toby Keith presented him with an absurd and outlandish touring concept before his passing:
“We were talking about doing a lot of things. One of the things he and I were talking about doing, he was absolutely dead*** serious. He said, ‘Let’s go do 365.’ I was like, ‘How?’ He was like, ‘You let the agents sort that s**t out. Let’s go do a 365.’
That means playing every night for a year. Let’s go do a 365. That’s how Toby was. Man, he’d look at things that were impossible to do and be laughing at them like, ‘Okay, let’s go do it three times.’ Just to show them.”
Classic Toby Keith.
We followed up on that story, and Jamey Johnson was happy to give the 365 idea some more time. He admitted that he was awfully close with Toby, and that the Big Dog Daddy had a part in encouraging him to come back and release new music.
But even the 365 idea seemed far-fetched for Johnson, as he said that if it were anyone else other than Keith that would have brought it to his attention, he wouldn’t have even given it any thought:
“Normally, if somebody were to mention that idea, my ears would close up and I wouldn’t hear another word. It would just seem like such a ridiculous thing. But when you are dealing with Toby Keith, you are dealing with a man who has the financial means to make that work any way that it needed to work.
I knew he was serious about it, and he didn’t care what the paycheck was at the end of it. He didn’t care what we spent or what. He just cared about, ‘Let’s go do 365 and just prove we can.’ To who? I don’t know.”
That was the beautiful thing about Toby Keith. He was always raising the bar for himself, and consistently succeeded to jump over it (then raise the bar again).
The 365 tour was a lofty goal, and in a moment of transparency, Jamey Johnson shared that he’s just not a big enough fan of being on the road to even think up an idea like that. He likes to get home a good amount and avoid burnout… but he did say that he and Keith were incredibly close to pulling the trigger on it before the world lost the great Toby Keith:
“I could really see Toby and I pulling together 365 shows in a row. I was up for it, I was ready for it and I can’t say I was excited about it. It seemed like it couldn’t be done, or that it wouldn’t be done easy. He was talking about not just playing the sheds and the civic centers and all that stuff. He wanted to play every dive bar this country has to offer.”
Sounds like one hell of a tour. And at the end of the day, it was about the fans… this wasn’t 365 stadium or arena shows with big checks… he would’ve been in the dive bars, in the clubs, bringing music to every corner of the United States.
It even makes you wonder… could Jamey Johnson still pull it off as a way to honor the Big Dog Daddy? Would there be a part of him that could put his own feelings aside and just do it for Toby Keith, and prove it absolutely nobody like TK wanted to do?
Well we asked Jamey Johnson that, and here’s what he had to say:
“Hell no. He gave birth to a really good idea, and I’m ready to pass it along to the next generation. If anybody’s got it in them, go do 365 for Toby.”
