As a result, he has scored more than any other player in their first 100 Premier League appearances in the division’s history. However, Haaland had instantly claimed the record at kick-off, having surpassed Alan Shearer’s tally last season. His strike away to Ipswich in January saw him overtake the Newcastle legend’s tally of 79 in his opening 100 matches. Not only has Haaland scored more than any other player in his first century of Premier League appearances, he has also outscored a club. With his opening weekend brace against Wolves, he moved past West Brom, who had scored 86 times in their first 100 matches in the competition. Meanwhile, Haaland now has 127 goals in 149 appearances for City across all competitions. It means he is now just five goals away from being in the club’s top 10 all-time scorers despite only arriving three years ago. Haaland and Jan Paul van Hecke clashed multiple times during the first halfGetty The goal capped an eventful first half for Haaland at the American Express Stadium. As well as coming close on multiple occasions, he was also involved in a heated battle with Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. The Dutchman clashed with Haaland after his tame effort was saved by Verbruggen early on. They tussled for the ball once again later in the half before Van Hecke was booked for a reckless lunge on Tijjani Reijnders. talkSPORT’s Scott Minto was not surprised to see Haaland have the last laugh in his battle with the Seagulls man, though. Speaking on commentary, he admitted: “Erling Haaland’s had three good chances before now and Van Hecke looked like he was taunting him with one of them. “I was thinking to myself, ‘What are you doing? This is Erling Haaland, one of, if not the, greatest finisher in world football’. “It’s still early in the game and, yeah there’s a slight bit of luck but you earn your luck the way that Oscar Bobb ran into the box and then played into Marmoush – it almost nutmegged two centre-halves in two different moves. “But Haaland’s there and he’s not going to miss that opportunity and I’m just thinking to myself if you’re a defender you do not want to get him angry – 1-0 clinical finish. Honestly, he could have had four by now.” Haaland had seen a close range header saved by Verbruggen earlier in the opening 45 minutes, one of six efforts on goal for the City man. However, a James Milner penalty and a Brajan Gruda strike saw the Seagulls comeback to claim a stunning win.
