Sometimes things are just not meant to be.
Dolly Parton is involved with many entrepreneurial endeavors, but there is one offer that she recently was asked to make that her team declined.
Kinsey Schofield, a celebrity commentator, recently shared on The Nerve with Maureen Callahan podcast that Meghan Markle approached Dolly Parton about appearing on her lifestyle and cooking show, With Love, Meghan.
Since marrying into the royal family, Meghan has drawn much criticism for her handling of being a royal. Many overseas strongly dislike her for how she handled being in the royal family… obviously, they don’t have great relationships with Harry’s family anymore, and she’s kind of just an unlikable person who always comes across as pretty entitled in the media. Fans of hers will say the “racist” Monarchy has successfully executed a smear campaign against her, and that’s why there is such a negative aura around her.
But… you can’t argue with that she says.
That narrative has not changed much as Meghan, who initially claimed she did not like being in the limelight, has now put her life on our TV screens with her lifestyle and cooking show, With Love, Meghan, and with the launch of her podcast. After the first season of her Netflix show, she received some criticism that she was not crafting or truly cooking food. She got a lot of criticism, specifically on the $15 edible flowers she topped many of her finished products with. Markle had guest appearances like Mindy Kaling, Roy Choi, and more, and there are expected to be more friends and celebrities to appear on season two of the show. However, now that the show has been reportedly renewed for a third season, Kinsey Schofield shared that a source told her they asked Dolly Parton to appear on season three.
However, Parton declined, and her team was unhappy with the offer for the “Backwoods Barbie” singer to make a cameo.
“Her team was livid. Because no, they don’t want to risk Dolly’s reputation Q score, her popularity by associating with Meghan Markle. They knew that this ask was just to give Meghan Markle credibility in this lifestyle space, a space that Dolly does have a lot of credibility in.”
Parton is no stranger to the homemaking space. Parton has a line of dishware and cooking utensils, has partnered with Duncan Hines, recently launched her line of pre-made foods, and has a cookbook with her sister. This is just the tip of what Dolly Parton is involved in outside of country music, and because of this, she is well-loved by folks in all spaces.
“Dolly is not only incredibly popular and loved by the general public, but she also is somebody who can float around within these different places.”
Kinsey Schofield elaborated. Schofield then said that Dolly Parton’s team was offended by the question because they felt that Markle was taking advantage of Parton’s popularity and just wanted to have her on the show to help boost views.
“Her team really feels like Meghan was trying to take advantage of her popularity, and so absolutely not. No, they did not make time for Dolly to appear on ‘With Love, Megan.'”
Many of Dolly Parton’s fans love her for her authenticity. Markle, on the other hand, many feel as though she’s not authentic and is involved in projects that help her public appearances rather than things that are of interest to her or that she is an expert in.
A prime example is the podcast name: Confessions of a Female Founder. What exactly has Meghan Markle founded? When most people see a title like that, they think they are listening to a powerhouse CEO speak who built a company from the ground up, but the former Suits actress does not have that life experience. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I’m simply using this as an example for the narrative that fans believe she’s not authentic.
Kinsey Schofield concluded her thoughts on this segment by suggesting that Markle’s team is trying to get likeable celebrities on the show so Markle appears likable. However, the biggest name they can pull for the show’s second season is Chrissy Teigen, who has had her own list of issues in the public eye.
While some outlets report that Parton’s team “snubbed” Markle, I doubt that. I bet Dolly and her team politely declined and then shared their frustrations with the motive behind the ask, behind closed doors. Dolly also has reasons for making media appearances and famously turned down Kate Middleton’s invitation to have tea because Kate wouldn’t let her plug her upcoming rock album. So Dolly herself is no stranger to having a media agenda.
But that being said, Dolly recently said she was hoping to take Kate up on the offer this fall when she returns to England, and she also added that you can “never say never” on a cooking collaboration with Meghan Markle. So, who really knows what was said behind closed doors.
If anything, I bet Markle’s team was more upset about her turning down the offer. I mean, who wouldn’t want Dolly Parton to make a cameo on their show?
