If you’ve ever been fired, think back to the person that did the firing. You probably dislike that person at the very least, if not think they’re an insufferable dick for making the decision. Now what if that person were a friend of yours for decades? Probably muddies those feelings, eh? That’s what I’d imagine has been going through ex-Megadeth bassist David Ellefson‘s mind in the years since he was shitcanned from the legendary thrash metal band.

Remember, he was kicked out of the band over an online sex scandal that ultimately panned out into a whole lot of nothing. To sum it all up, he got involved with a 19-year-old fan and got a video of him jerkin’ the gerkin posted all over social media as a result. The act was consensual, though the posting of said video wasn’t. Was it creepy for a man in his mid-50s to be doing anything sexual with a 19 year old? Yes. But a fireable offense? Nahhh.

Despite that fact, Megadeth founder and frontman Dave Mustaine ended Ellefson’s tenure with the band over the incident and that’s been that ever since. In a recent interview with The Delz Show (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Ellefson looked back on the relationship he used to have with Mustaine and how he misses the friend he had for all those years.

“I miss Dave too. Look, some of some of the best stories of my life begin with ‘the time me and Dave’ — fill in the blank. You know what I mean? Because we lived such an interesting life together with that band. We haven’t talked in a few years, but I miss the guy, of course. We had a lot of fun. And anytime we’ve ever had [a falling out] like this [in the past], as soon as we get back together, it’s like we just were hanging out yesterday.”

That being said, Ellefson has been extremely real about the ending of his friendship with Mustaine in various interviews. At times, he related that when he came back to the band in 2010, he was no longer a part owner of Megadeth as a company and was reduced to a hired gun, per se.

Just last month, he appeared on The Candid Mic with Fran Strine, during which point he said he and Mustaine have completely cut ties since his ousting from the band. He also admitted the falling out was inevitable.

“Look, the ending of that friendship was a long time in the making. It really started in 2018… There was some stuff that I was just — and I was vocal about it. I stood up for what I felt to be the right thing. And, of course, that was not well received… [It was] just about writing the new album, the next album that took five years to make. And every time I would try to write and put something on it, it would get taken off. And it seemed very personal. And at some point it’s just kind of, like, ‘Look, dude, if you don’t want me here, fuck it. I’ll move on.’ So I guess it took what it took and what happened, happened. And then that was the moment to just sort of abolish it and make it all go away.”

It’s gotta be hard on a personal level to lose a friend like that. But as Ellefson has said multiple times, Megadeth is a business and it’s Dave Mustaine’s show.
