LET’S GO.
Cross Canadian Ragweed is making a tradition out of their legendary reunion show in the town that kick-started their entire career: Stillwater, Oklahoma.
In April, one of the biggest – if not the biggest – red dirt reunions of all time. Cross Canadian Ragweed made their triumphant return to the stage after a 15-year hiatus for their 4-night run of Boys From Oklahoma shows at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Cross Canadian Ragweed was a cornerstone band of the red dirt music movement, forming in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in the mid-1990s, featuring the likes of Cody Canada, Grady Cross, Randy Ragsdale, and Jeremy Plato. Ragweed took off like a rocket ship with the release of their 1998 debut album, Carney. CCR went on to release 7 studio albums and 3 live albums, but sadly disbanded in 2010. Red Dirt fans were beyond heartbroken when the group broke up, and from a conversation with Cody Canada, it seemed there was no way in hell they would get back together, comparing their breakup to a divorce.
“The offers I get for Ragweed are really hard to overlook sometimes. But people don’t realize the hard feelings that are still there. It’s like asking somebody who is divorced if they’ll get remarried. The answer is ‘F*ck no,’ right? Well, what if somebody offers you three million dollars to get remarried? I’d love to be able to say yes, but I wouldn’t feel right about it.”
However, time heals all wounds, and eventually, Cody Canada felt like the stars were aligning for them to give it another go and get the band back together. Canada explained on the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast:
“I was ready to put down that discomfort. It wasn’t a great breakup, but nobody died… nobody killed anybody. We were just overworked at 30 years old with brand new babies on the ground. We should have said nicer things, and I’m a very stubborn person, and so are the rest of the guys. So we just didn’t talk for 15 years.
We started the ball rolling very secretively. Our booking agent and our accountant got together with the other two guys and said, ‘What do you all think?’ And one of the other guys said, ‘I’ve been sober for 10 years waiting for this.’ That’s a green light. So we all signed NDA’s.. I 100% admit that I can’t keep my mouth shut when I’m excited about something. So we signed NDA’s and made it a surprise, and we slowly started unveiling it.”
Due to the implication, a reunion was entirely off the table, fans of the red dirt group freaked out when the Boys From Oklahoma show was announced. There was such high demand for the reunion show (150,000 people registered for presale tickets) that the one-night concert morphed into a four-night run. And every night sold out pretty much immediately. Boone Pickens was electric for those four nights with Cross Canadian Ragweed bringing on guest performers like Dierks Bentley, Parker McCollum, Wyatt Flores, and more.
The reunion show did not end in Stillwater, though. With demand for tickets still at an all-time high, the group decided to head to the Lone Star State for an encore show, Texas edition.
Over the weekend, Cross Canadian Ragweed, the Turnpike Troubadours, Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers Band, and more hit the stage at Baylor’s McLane Stadium. The stadium was packed with more than 35,000 people, and country music fans sang along to Texas and red dirt music all night long.
At the end of the night, some fans, including myself, were interested in seeing if Cross Canadian Ragweed would announce a tour or more tour dates, given they also performed in Colorado recently, standing in for Tim McGraw at the PBR’s ‘Last Cowboy Standing’ event.
While it was not a tour announcement, what they shared with fans at McLane Stadium might be even better. Before Cody Canada performed the final song of the night, he and Evan Felker asked the crowd if they would come to more events like this.
“I just want to ask you one thing. Would you do this again with us?”
Of course, the audience roared with applause. Evan Felker then takes the microphone:
“I guess we’ll see you guys in Stillwater next year, huh?”
Cody Canada then says into the mic:
“Why don’t we just do a repeat performance, and we’ll see you guys in Stillwater, in let’s say… April. Evan would like that very much, so that means we’re gonna do it. How ’bout this? We’ll see y’all next year!
Be good, be nice, see y’all down the line.”
