When it comes to hand-me-downs, there’s nothing better than music being handed down from generation to generation.

Do you remember the first time you heard a country song? Did it spark a lifetime of fandom for the genre? Those are the questions that are currently being explored over on the r/country page of the online forum known as Reddit.

And some country music-loving Redditors are currently discussing which tracks they listened to early on in life thanks to their parents and grandparents. For me, I vividly recall hearing a good amount of Alan Jackson and Clint Black playing throughout the house. And I also remember hearing the song “My Maria” by Brooks & Dunn on repeat (thanks mom). And that’s the cool thing about music, right? It can take you back to a time and place, and you often don’t even have to think about it all that much. It’s crazy that I can hear a song and I’m immediately transported back to my high school days. Sometimes the radio will present a track by an artist that I just so happened to see in concert… from the pit.

All that to say that there’s a lot of power in music, and often times, the people we surround ourselves with help us craft our musical taste. I’ll always be a U2 fan because of my father, and I’m sure you likely have a favorite artist that may have been passed down to you from a loved one.

But if a family member is able to pass down an entire genre… that’s pretty special. There were a lot of people on Reddit that credited their love to country to their parents and grandparents. Others didn’t get too specific, but I’d guess that a lot of moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas helped introduce young country music fans to country stylings that stayed with them for a lifetime:

“Mostly lived with my grandparents growing up, 90% of what they listened to was country. I remember hearing Slim Whitman, Patsy Cline and Wanda Jackson the most. The only two CDs I ever knew of my mom listening to are ‘Wide Open Spaces’ by Dixie Chicks and ‘Rumours’ by Fleetwood Mac. I do remember her singing ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ by Shania Twain when it came on the radio once though.”

“Whatever was on 80s Nashville radio! Hank Jr., Willie Nelson, the Highwaymen, Ricky Skaggs, Merle, Dolly, Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Keith Whitley, Charlie Daniels, The Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, George Jones, George Strait… I know I can put on an 80s greatest hits and pretty much know all the words even to the songs I’ve not heard or thought of for decades.”

“Conway and Loretta duets, Hank Williams Jr, David Allan Coe, Kenny Rodgers, and Merle Haggard”

“Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Shania Twain, Dwight Yoakam and LeAnn Rimes. I grew up in the ’90s in case you couldn’t tell.”

“Hank Sr., Dolly, Patsy, Willie, Waylon, Emmylou, Tom T. Hall. And then my mom liked a lot of what was pop country at the time. Ronnie Milsap, Olivia Newton John, Eddie Rabbitt. And then as I got a little older, George Strait, Dwight Yoakam.”

“Basically all of them? Radio exposed me to 80s and 90s artists. Hee Haw & Porter Wagoner show reruns exposed me to even older artists.”

“My parents weren’t country. It was my aunt that came with the country influence. Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Hank Sr, Buck Owens, Del Reeves, Charley Pride, Jerry Lee Lewis.”

“Alabama, Randy Travis, George Straight, The Judds.”

“A ton of Willie Nelson and southern rock. I got most of the country music from my cousins and grandma.”

“I was raised on outlaws, Jones, and Ray Stevens.”

“Blake. I grew up thinking he was just as much a legend as Garth is.”

“John Anderson. My mom adored him. She even had framed autographed photo hanging in their bedroom. She didn’t even have pics of dad or us kids in the bedroom.”

“My parents didn’t listen to country music. My grandfather loved Johnny cash. My dad did like Charley pride, but that’s the extent of his country music listening experience.”

“Just the good ones: Waylon, Willie, Kris, Cash, Emmylou, George Jones, Marty Stuart, Hank Williams. It was like having a library in the house. If I heard of an artist, all I had to do was flip through his collection and if he didn’t have an album by them then chances were that he had a song of theirs on a compilation. Thanks Dad.”

Man… that “Thanks Dad” hit me hard for some reason. Who’s cutting onions in here? The post Country Music Fans Share The Artists That Got Passed Down To Them By Their Parents & Grandparents first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
