How do you feel about Christmas commercials? Personally, I’m a fan, and feel as though they help nurture that holiday feeling. Though I do understand that some people can be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of Christmas commercials. I know I’ve audibly said out loud, “They’re still rolling out John Travolta as Santa Clause, huh?” Some of the advertisements that are supposed to set the mood for the holiday season end up doing the exact opposite.
Like Coca-Cola’s “The Holidays Are Coming” ads that used to be beloved, but are now disgracefully made with artificial intelligence (they rolled out AI-generated commercials for the second year in a row).
However, there are some companies that know just the right buttons to press when it comes to Christmas time advertising. If you are looking for the best Christmas commercial of all time, look no further than Corona’s short-but-sweet “Feliz Navidad” advertisement. It first aired in 1990, and guess what? The Mexican-born brew said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
They’ve rolled out the same exact timeless commercial for 35 years now, and it’s magnificent:
Is it weird that a beer commercial takes me back to my childhood?
That commercial right there is one of the oldest annual ads that run this time of the year. The lit-up palm tree narrowly beats out the recognizable M&M’s “They Do Exist” commercial (where Santa faints), which came out in 1996. However, Corona’s Christmas ad is actually one year younger than the Hershey’s Kisses Jingle Bells. That one first graced our television screens in 1989 (feel old yet?).
And hey, those two other commercials are great in their own right. But nothing – and I mean NOTHING – beats the simplicity of a beach shack lighting up their Christmas palm tree as someone whistles “O Christmas Tree” and waves crash onto a distant shore. It’s classic. It’s uncomplicated. It’s a beacon of Christmas, letting everyone know that the holiday season is here – and you might want to drink a couple of brewskis in order to get through it.
Considering its longevity, one could easily make a case that it’s not just one of the best Christmas commercials of all time. It could be one of the greatest ads ever. An advertisement typically has a short shelf life, with advertisers and marketers trying to keep up with the current trends. Corona – ironically enough – said, “Hold my beer,” and has rolled out the same ad at the same time for countless years… and everyone loves it.
Just looks at some of the responses from social media users that saw the ad online:
It’s the goat of Xmas advertising. I actually look forward to seeing this commercial every year.
