Cody Johnson is back at it again, taking his fans to church.
It’s not uncommon for the Texas native to take a moment out of his shows to thank the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to keep our nation free, or to promote peace during times of stress like the election. During each of these speeches, he speaks with passion and conviction, hyping up the crowd whether or not they have the same political views as Johnson. He spreads a message of patriotism in these moments.
During Tailgates N’ Tallboys, CoJo had another one of these moments, touching on the protests in Los Angeles. Over the last week, tensions rose in Los Angeles over Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations to track down and arrest those who are in the country illegally. Protests turned violent last weekend after anti-ICE activists began throwing rocks at law enforcement and attempting to prevent them from arresting undocumented immigrants.
The violence prompted President Donald Trump to send the National Guard to LA to assist in keeping the peace and protecting federal buildings; however, this move only angered the rioters further, along with California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The protests have not calmed down now with videos of rioters burning cars, throwing projectiles and fireworks at law enforcement, and more. And now it has spread to multiple cities across the country.
Yesterday, protesters gathered all over the nation and in Southern California for “No Kings Day” protests against President Trump. The protests depicted President Trump as an aspiring monarch who is clashing with local officials and violating various democratic norms.
All in all, it’s a bad situation on all fronts.
Last night, during his headlining performance, Cody Johnson took a second to talk about the protests.
Cody Johnson goes on to say that we all need to be unified under the red, white, and blue during this time. Although we might be different, we need to stand by our nation and remember the freedoms we have that many other nations do not. The freedoms that were paid for with the blood, sweat and tears of our United States military members.
“All I’ve seen is division… but tonight, at my show, we’re gonna talk about unity. Earlier I mentioned how we’re all different, but you know there’s three things we all have in common… those things are red, white and blue.
Do you know why it’s ok to disagree, why it’s ok to be different, to believe differently… because before most of us were born, an American soldier gave their life for the right to be different in this country and to be free.
“On the news today, there were a lot of protests for one reason or another. All across the country, people were protesting something. But you know what I have? I have a microphone and 25,000 Americans. So tonight, we are going to protest the protests. We’re gonna sing a song out of unity.”

After saying the short speech, Johnson led the Tailgates N’ Tallboys crowd in an a cappella sing-along to “God Bless America.”

Johnson knows how to bring people together, and this moment put a pause on the chaos of the world and the protests, and just united thousands of people by sharing a few words and singing together.
No matter your viewpoint, Cody Johnson knows how to unite a group; this moment is a prime example. The post Cody Johnson Weighs In On Nationwide Protests & Riots During Festival Performance: “We Are Going To Protest The Protests” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
