Charley Crockett is the coolest cat in country music, and he’s back with another killer album as proof.
Released just five months after his previous record Lonesome Drifter, Crockett’s brand new album Dollar A Day picks up right where he left off and marks the second installment of his “Sagebrush Trilogy.” For most artists, this level of prolificacy would inevitably result in some degree of sacrificing quality for quantity, but that’s not the case for Crockett. As an artist who honed his craft busking on street corners and crowded subway cars, Crockett has made a name for himself as a grinder, hustler, and hard worker, and this unprecedented output just means he’s catching his groove.
From steel-soaked honky tonk heaters, to soulful grooves, and slowed down balladry that teeters on the verge of cowboy poetry, Dollar A Day features a healthy mix of originals and deep cut covers that total to 15 tracks, all of which fit perfectly within the ethos of Crockett’s brand while quietly pushing the boundaries of sonic diversity within his catalog. Co-produced by the great Shooter Jennings, the album transports the listener to a nostalgic era of the American West, characterized by mystery and wonder, much like the man behind the music.
With tall tales of cowboys on horseback, solitary drifters, and traveling barroom musicians, Dollar A Day is laden with larger than life stories of characters who persevered with their backs against their wall, laughed in the face of adversity, and went all in with the cards they were dealt because they didn’t have much of a choice. Drawing inspiration, one can only imagine, from Crockett’s own larger than life story and journey as a musician, or at least resembling the people he met and relationships he made along the way, Dollar A Day is bound by the sentiment that hard work isn’t just expected of cowboys, it’s a necessity for survival, whether you’re the driving cattle kind or the troubadour kind.
So without further ado, give Charley Crockett’s latest album Dollar A Day a listen for yourself… here’s a few early favorites:
“Dollar A Day”
“El Paso to Denver”
“Santa Fe Ring”
“Die With My Dreams On”
“Ballad Of A Lonesome Drifter”
The Son of Davy just doesn’t miss. Never has, never will.
