COME ON WITH IT.
Shooter Jennings and Benjamin Tod are cooking up something good in the studio. Earlier this week, August 7th, Benjamin Tod took fans inside the studio, sharing some behind-the-scenes footage of what he’s working on. But instead of footage of men sitting around a soundboard listening to an unreleased tune, or Tod himself in the studio, it’s a clip of the legendary producer and son of Waylon Jennings, Shooter Jennings, in the booth laying down some vocals.
And he’s singing none other than one of his dad’s famed songs, “Outlaw S***.”
Jennings’ classic, “Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit’s Done Got Out of Hand,” was reworked and posthumously released as “Outlaw S***” in 2008. It was originally released in October 1978, shortly after Waylon’s infamous DEA raid, as the second single from his album I’ve Always Been Crazy. The song peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot Country chart. The upbeat melody and outlaw lyrics reflect on the wild ways of his life, wondering if at times he took living the outlaw lifestyle too far.
“Don’t you think this outlaw sh*t
Has gotten out of hand?
What started out to be a joke
The law don’t understand
Was it singing through my nose
That got me busted by the man?
This ain’t it, this outlaw shit
Has gotten out of hand…”
When the song was rereleased following his death, renamed “Outlaw S***,” the tune took on a much slower pace, as if he were looking back on his life, versus the original upbeat tune he sang while living in the fast lane.
In the video, Shooter belts out the lyrics to “Outlaw S***,” and you can only imagine his father must be so proud, looking down on this moment. Tod, pan the camera to him and looks pleased as hell about what they are cooking up.
In a video that Tod shared before this clip, he noted that he was about to get in the studio with Shooter Jennings to work on an original honky tonk record. Could this cover of “Outlaw S***” be on that record? While it’s not confirmed yet, you can hear the melody in the background of this video is worked into a slow Western waltz style melody, similar to something you’d listen to in a traditional honky tonk.
I sure hope we get this rendition of “Outlaw S***” on this forthcoming project because I am craving more from this short teaser. Benjamin Tod has a lot in the pipeline for fans, and we are so ready.
