Arsenal told to make shock move for Phil Foden as Man City struggle to offload Jack Grealish
Phil Foden has been tipped to follow Jack Grealish out of the Manchester City exit door this summer, with Arsenal linked as a possible next destination. talkSPORT host and ex-Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes both English stars could depart the Etihad Stadium as the club continues to splash the cash on new signings. Grealish is set to leave Man City this summer, but could hometown hero Foden be set to join him?Getty The writing is on the wall for Grealish, with the £100million man officially put on the market by City after leaving him out of their Club World Cup squad. However, reports claim City are yet to receive any offers for the England midfielder, despite halving his transfer fee and putting him up for sale for £50m. City are keen to move Grealish on four years after his then-British record arrival in August 2021, with two years still left to run on his £300,000-a-week contract. However, they may be forced to listen to loan offers for the 29-year-old as they look to get him out the door. Grealish has been linked with a possible moves to Tottenham and Everton, while Arsenal could be another option given Gunners manager Mikel Arteta’s links to City. But, asked if the former Aston Villa star could be an option to strengthen Arsenal’s side, Cascarino said: “No, I think Foden’s way more likely. “Obviously Arteta worked at Man City with Phil Foden and for whatever reason, I’m sure we’ll find out down the line, Phil Foden just hasn’t been the player we know him to be this season. “From where he was the Football Writers’ Player of the Year the season before, his performances this year have just not justified that. “But all what’s happening at City and all the spending that’s gone on, I wouldn’t be surprised if Foden is allowed to go somewhere. “Whether City let him go Arsenal, I don’t know, but they let Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko go there. It’s been a disappointed season for Foden, whose place in the Man City starting XI is no longer guaranteedAFP “If Arsenal could get him, I think Arteta would really consider that, yeah.” It was a poor campaign from Grealish, whose on-pitch struggles were at first affected by injury, before issues away from the field began to take their toll. The 26-year-old ended the campaign with ten goals and six assists in all competitions, which is not a terrible effort but is a big drop off compared to his previous season, where he managed 27 goals and 13 assists, helped City to the Premier League title and was named the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year. After a few injuries which took him in and out of the team, Foden – whose third child was born during Euro 2024 last summer – admitted in January that he felt burned out mentally and physically. “I’ve had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally,” he told the Manchester Evening news. “It’s one of them – sometimes there’s things in life that are bigger than football. This season I’ve struggled a little bit. Cascarino suggests Arsenal could be a good fit for the unsettled Man City starGetty Reports claim there have been no takers for £50m Grealish so far, and Man City may have to move him out on loan this summerGetty “Hopefully come next year I can get my head mentally right, get back where I left the season before – because I know what I’m capable of doing and the quality I have.” Given his lack of minutes and impact in the City team this term, Cascarino insists Foden’s need to play regular football next season is as important as Grealish’s, and wouldn’t rule out him moving on from City after their mega-spending window. “Foden is only 26, so he’s still got a lot of football in him,” said the former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland striker. “For whatever reason he’s had a disappointing year, and I’m sure Arteta would know what’s happened and gone on behind the scenes at City, absolutely. “And I know some Arsenal fans will say, ‘But he’s had a poor year’, but Phil Foden’s a very gifted footballer. A terrific player. “He doesn’t want to go into the next season being in and out of a team when there’s a World Cup in the summer. Otherwise he won’t play, no chance. “And what have City spent in the last two windows? They must be close to £300million.” City have actually spent just shy of that £300m mark, having splashed a total of £291m so far in 2025 – but it’s likely that figure will be even more by the time the transfer window closes. They signed four new players in January – Omar Marmoush [£63.2m], Nico Gonzalez [£50m], Abdukodir Khusanov [£33.7m] and Vitor Reis [£29.6.m]. They’ve added four more new faces already this summer, spending £46.3m on AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, £36.3m on Wolves full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, £34m on French playmaker Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli for a nominal fee. “With
