Last weekend, the Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour made its way to Smith Mountain Lake near Roanoke, Virginia, for its annual “Heavy Hitters” stop, the B&W Trailer Hitches Heavy Hitters Presented by Bass Pro Shops. “Heavy Hitters” is an annual event on the tour that features a limited amount of anglers who must qualify, but the crux of the event is that they write some big checks for some big bass.
With over 42 pounds, Nick Hatfield won the event rather easily, earning not only his first championship belt, but a $100,000 check, plus an extra $10,000 for catching the biggest bass during his second day of qualifying. Jeff Sprague’s 6+ pound largemouth took home the Berkley Big Bass title for the tournament, and cashed him a $100,000 check as well. A number of other anglers cashed big checks too.
It was a bit of a mixed bag, with anglers utilizing a variety of techniques to put bass in the boat. Spinnerbaits and Chatterbaits played, the Neko rig has become quite the popular bait across professional bass fishing this year, and you can always count on a swim jig or a frog to get some bites.
So that being said, let’s take a look at some of the baits that got the job done with Tackle Warehouse links* to each.
