Young Georgia Fan Who Went Viral For Refusing To Sing “Rocky Top” At Christmas Program Explains Himself: “Never Gonna Sing That Trash”

You’ve probably seen the video of this young Georgia Bulldogs fan refusing to sing at his Chattanooga school’s Christmas program by now. Long story short, this school put on a holiday performance for parents, siblings and friends to come and enjoy. They covered a number of classic Christmas hits, and then closed out the show with a performance of “Rocky Top,” which was originally recorded in 1967 by the Osborne Brothers.
In case you don’t know, the University of Tennessee has basically claimed that track as their unofficial fight song. Knoxville has become somewhat synonymous with “Rocky Top,” and Tennessee fans sing it loud and proud (and obnoxiously) any chance that they get. Thus, Georgia fans would never, under any circumstance, participate in a “Rocky Top” sing-along.
Which is why this young Georgia Bulldogs fan by the name of Nolan McGill is making waves on the internet. As the rest of his classmates broke into the Tennessee fight song, he stood still, crossed his arms and shook his head in disapproval (and definitely didn’t sing). And his Georgia Bulldogs parents must be so proud:
@kelseymcg2 When the school wants you to sing Rocky Top in the holiday performance but you’re a Dawgs fan. #georgiafootball #godawgs @UGA Football ♬ original sound – Kelsey
Love that you can hear the dad saying, “That’s my boy” early on in the clip.
Funny enough, David Pollack – a former College GameDay analyst for ESPN – tracked down the kid and had him on his See Ball Get Ball podcast. It was in the short interview that we all found out more about Nolan McGill, and that he has grown up in Tennessee, but was raised a Georgia fan.
The young man that clearly bleeds Bulldogs red and black explained why he chose not to participate in that particular part of Christmas program (he sang the other, non-Tennessee related tunes). It really just came down to him not wanting to betray the Bulldogs:
“It was an after school winter program. Our music teacher had us sing a whole bunch of songs. And one of those songs was ‘Rocky Top,’ sadly, and I’m never gonna sing that trash… It’s a horrible song. Go Dawgs.”
An absolute star in the making… if the College GameDay crew doesn’t get Nolan McGill on their show this weekend, they are doing it all wrong.
Nolan went on to say that he’s taken a lot of pride in seeing the video blow up online. His parents posted it for the world to see, and the people of the college football world are loving it. And in case you were wondering what team Nolan is going for to win the College Football Playoffs… it’s THE DAWGS.
