Tyler Childers To Release Longtime Fan-Favorite, “Oneida,” Next Week

Finally.

This morning, Tyler Childers announced the official release of longtime fan-favorite, “Oneida,” very soon… next Wednesday, July 2nd, to be exact. Fans have been speculating based on some hints in the album teasers that it’s likely on the tracklist for his forthcoming album Snipe Hunter, and today, we got the official confirmation so that’s excellent news on this lovely Thursday morning.

If you’re unfamiliar with why fans are so excited to hear the studio version of this song, it’s because in 2016, Tyler returned to Red Barn Radio, where he first starting creating some buzz for himself over ten years ago, and he played it after letting it “collect dust” for a long time.

It’s incredibly unique and funny, where Tyler talks about being infatuated with an older woman, in a way you’ve probably never heard before…

“Back before birthdays were something she dreads
Back before children had settled her friends
Back when the radio spoke to her heart
Oh, girls they wanna have fun

I lay here awake and I laugh at her jokes
She is referencing movies I’m too young to know
And I’m letting her lead as we dance in the dark
Oh girl, I’m falling in love”

Even though fans had such a strong reaction to it, for obvious reasons, Tyler has never played it very much live… in fact, it’s only been about a dozen times over the course of his career. In fact, his first full band performance of the song came just a few years ago in 2022.

When you have as many incredible unreleased songs as he does, there’s just only so much time to include them in a set list when he obviously wants to play the songs from his albums, but it’s sounding more like that’s going to be less of an issue because I think quite a few of the unreleased gems will be on this forthcoming Rick Rubin-produced record.

Tyler has already put out the lead single from Snipe Hunter, “Nose On The Grindstone,” which fans have loved since 2017 and was only ever formally recorded in an incredible OurVinyl Sessions video. I, like many others, had waiting a long time for that one, so I was incredibly excited to finally get a studio version of it and I’ve had it on repeat.

Of course, Rubin is a legendary producer who has worked with everyone from Beastie Boys and Run DMC to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica, and he has a reputation for pushing artists well outside of their comfort zones and creating real magic. I was surprised, but extremely excited, to see him and Tyler were formally working together, and this is already shaping up to be an incredible record. Tyler himself, as well as Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn, also have producing credits on Snipe Hunter. The new album is set to drop on July 25th.

But “Oneida” is special, and I know it will be well-worth the wait. I’m just thankful he’s finally cut it in the studio… we deserve this.
