Transfer notebook: Nunez pushing for Liverpool exit, Amorim makes Hojlund decision, bargain relegated star wanted by two clubs

Darwin Nunez is pushing for a move to Napoli, talkSPORT understands. Liverpool are willing to sell the striker this summer to fund a move for a new attacker. Nunez is likely to leave Anfield before the end of the transfer window, with clubs from Saudi Arabia also interested in the Uruguay international. Napoli, fresh from lifting the Serie A title, have emerged as the strongest contenders to keep Nunez in Europe and the striker is believed to be keen on a move to join Antonio Conte, who has a knack for getting his leading men ticking up front. Nunez has an OK record for Liverpool with 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 appearances for the Reds. His tally of 25 goals and 13 assists in 49 starts is essentially a goal every two games and an assist in every four. However, that’s not what you pay £85m for – which is what Liverpool forked over to Benfica for the frontman in June 2022. Nunez has been a popular figure with the Anfield faithful, who have routinely praised his talent to cause absolute chaos for the opposition defence. But it appears the jury is out with manager Arne Slot, who gave the striker just eight starts in the Premier League as they were crowned champions last season. His popularity has waned with some supporters, too, after a poorer campaign where his wastefulness and lack of clinical touch in front of goal came to the fore, and saw him manage just seven goals in all competitions. Liverpool are seeking a new star to lead the line up front, and are looking to recoup north of £59m [€70m] for Nunez. Amorim’s makes striker decision Ruben Amorim wants to keep Joshua Zirkzee at Manchester United this summer and would rather sell Rasmus Hojlund to generate funds. United have been told they must sell to enhance Amorim’s transfer kitty this summer, with both young strikers mentioned as possible outgoings after poor campaigns. Hojlund has struggled for consistency since joining from Atalanta and could depart Old TraffordGetty But talkSPORT understands Amorim has bigger plans for Zirkzee in his squad, with Hojlund the more likely to leave Old Trafford just two years after arrival from Atalanta in a deal worth £72m. Hojlund only managed ten goals in 52 appearances for the Red Devils last season, including just four in the Premier League. Incredibly, that’s the same amount of goal involvements as Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, who provided four assists in the top flight last term. Zirkzee didn’t fare any better, managing seven goals and three assists in 49 games in his first campaign with the Premier League giants, but his versatility is admired by Amorim. Inter Milan have shown an interest in 22-year-old Hojlund, who enjoyed his breakout season in Serie A for Atalanta. The player has insisted he wants to stay put this summer and fulfil his contract at United, but it appears his days at Old Trafford could be numbered for the No.9.
