If you aren’t listening to The Droptines yet, you really need to change that.
Hailing from the small town of Concan, located about an hour and a half west of San Antonio, The Droptines are in the midst of a huge summer and may just be the next band from Texas to breakthrough in a big way.
Releasing their first EP in 2019, the five-piece Texas country/rock outfit has spent the better part of the past decade honing their sound and spreading the word, and they experienced their first minor breakthrough with the release of their 4 More EP in 2022. It wasn’t until the release of their debut self-titled album The Droptines in January 2024, though, that the band’s music began reaching further than ever before, and country music fans from all over the country have latched on in droves.
Keeping the momentum going with the periodic release of new singles ever since, The Droptines have found themselves playing their music for new audiences in massive amphitheaters across the country as they tour in support of Whiskey Myers, and they’ve found themselves on the bill of some pretty major festivals along the way as well, gaining some serious exposure on the road.
And as the hype around their music continues to grow and they brace for a seemingly inevitable major breakthrough, the music industry has taken note as well, and it was announced earlier this week that The Droptines inked a deal with Big Loud Texas, joining fellow Texans Dylan Gossett and Jake Worthington on the label’s roster. A growing offshoot of the Big Loud Records conglomerate that represents many of country music’s biggest names, Big Loud Texas was started by Miranda Lambert and Jon Randall in 2023, and this new partnership strategically positions The Droptines alongside some of the industry’s heavy hitters as things really begin to take off.
With a distinct sound feels just as much at home in an old Texas dancehall as it does in a major city’s underground rock and roll scene, The Droptines are undeniably country, but the heavier guitar tones and gritty vocals from lead singer Conner Arthur give the band a harder edge. The band’s chief songwriter, Arthur’s lyricism often takes unique perspective and cleverly utilizes words and phrases you don’t often hear in songs, adding another element to the band’s unique nature.
All of these attributes are prominent in The Droptines’ label debut single “Take Too Much” that hit streaming platforms today.
Give it a listen for yourself here:
If you like what you heard in their latest single but haven’t had the chance yet to dive into their existing catalog, here are a few of my favorites to get you started.
“Army Green”
“Bill Of Sale”
“Snowed In”
In addition to Arthur, The Droptines is comprised of drummer Johnny Sheets, guitar slinger Donny Parkinson, Dillon Sampson on the bass, and pedal steel player Tony Rincon. Together, they make one heck of a country rock band than is on the verge of a major breakthrough, so don’t act surprised when these guys hit the big time.
In the meantime, there are plenty of opportunities to catch them live this summer and fall, so I suggest you make it out to a show when they come through a city near you. I just saw them open for Whiskey Myers in Charlotte, and let me tell you, The Droptines sound great live.
