Sierra Ferrell Releases Incredible Cover Of “A Lesson In Leavin'” Featuring Nikki Lane

She just doesn’t miss.

Today, Sierra Ferrell and Nikki Lane released beautiful cover of “A Lesson In Leavin’,” which was written by Randy Goodrum and Brent Maher. It was originally recorded in 1979 by Dottie West and included on her Special Delivery album, though you might know the Jo Dee Messina version better if you listened to the radio growing up in the ’90s.

She retitled it “Lesson in Leavin’,” and put it out in 1999 as the fourth single from her second album, 1998’s I’m Alright. The song was a major hit in 1999, spending seven weeks at # 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart that summer and remains a ’90s classic in my humble opinion. The Dottie West original did become a #1 on the Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart the week in 1980, and was her first #1 hit as a solo artist.

Of course, everything Sierra lends her voice on becomes better, and even more magical, and this recording is no different. She’s been everywhere it seems like as of late, earlier this summer opening stadiums for Post Malone and now out on her own tour, Sierra has also put out songs with Joe Jonas, Kashus Culpepper and Shaboozey.

It’s a cool, pretty acoustic cover, and my goodness… Sierra’s voice is just next level. Throw in the captivating stylings of Nikki Lane and you have an absolutely killer duet. It’s rare to find a cover that’s just as good, if not better than, the original of most classic songs, but this is just spectacular.
