Brass Against

VI (Footnote Records)

You may remember this group for what their vocalist did on stage with a fan (hint: someone got a face full of pee…), but they’re more than that one incident. Brass Against is known for covering rock and metal songs by arranging them for a big band kind of setup. Lots of brass instruments — hence the name — and a penchant for doing songs in their own style. This time around they’ve got Tool, Faith No More, and even Portishead covers.

Deos

Augustus Omnipotens (Wormholedeath Records)

How often do you think about the Roman Empire? Probably not as much as the dudes in French black/death metal outfit Deos, whose whole schtick is about the Roman Empire. So if that’s your jam and you want to revel in that kind of vibe, ‘Ave Imperator, morituri te salutant‘.

Enthroned

Ashspawn (Season of Mist)

Occult black metal stalwarts Enthroned are back with their 12th studio effort. Once again, we’re talking about a release from this act that’s full of despair and misanthropy. Unrelenting in nature and dense with sound, this one’s a motherfucker of a new release.

Persefone

Live In Andorra (Napalm Records)

If you like your death metal to be a little more musically complex, then the progressive death metal stylings of Persefone is for you. Like so many bands before them, Persefone have enlisted the help of an orchestra to embellish the band’s live sound on this record, adding a sense of gravitas to an already massive sounding band. In all honesty, this takes the word “epic” and turns it up to 11.

TesseracT

Radar (Kscope)

What is this? Two live albums in one STCOT?! You betcha. This time around, British progressive metal band TesseracT features a recording of their set during last year’s Radar Festival. There’s also a concert film to go with this release, so you can watch that night’s proceedings and imagine as if you were there.
