Arsenal fans are probably hoping for more signings before the window closes in a couple of weeks, but they likely need to make some sales to clear the decks for more arrivals.
The Gunners have made significant signings this summer, with moves worth £50 million or more for Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi, and Viktor Gyokeres. They may not be finished.
According to Fanaticos por Futebol, Arsenal are targeting Palmeiras defender Luiz Benedetti, with Mikel Arteta giving the green light to pursue a deal.
Benedetti, 19, is a towering 6ft 6’ centre-back who operates primarily on the left side of defence. Arsenal have been scouting for long-term defensive reinforcements and the teenager’s profile fits the mould of what the club are trying to build – young, technical talents with the physical presence to adapt to Premier League football.
Any move for Benedetti, however, is expected to hinge on potential outgoings. Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior are both viewed as expendable, with the Gunners keen to balance the squad and raise funds for further signings. Should that duo depart, a transfer for the Brazilian becomes far more realistic.
The strategy behind such a deal would be clear. Benedetti would not be expected to walk straight into Arteta’s first team, but could feature across both the academy and senior squads as he adapts to English football. Arsenal have enough senior players there currently with Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera all comfortable at left centre-back.
With Gabriel and William Saliba firmly established as first-choice centre-backs, adding another young defender to the ranks could provide Arteta with depth while also planning ahead for the future.
Whether a deal progresses this summer or in a future window will likely depend on sales, but Arteta’s approval highlights the belief within the club that Benedetti has the tools to develop into a serious option for the Gunners in the years to come.
