Phil Jones graduates as he prepares for new career – with ceremony taking place at rival stadium
Phil Jones has received a Diploma in Sport Directorship after graduating from the PFA Business School. The former Manchester United defender was presented with his diploma at a ceremony on Tuesday. He was amongst the current and former players to be recognised at Arsenal‘s Emirates Stadium. Newcastle’s Yoane Wissa and five-time Premier League winner Ilkay Gundogan were also amongst the graduating class. Jones, who retired aged 32 last year, is looking ahead to putting his Diploma to use in the future. The ex-England international said: “It’s a proud moment for me to graduate today. This is something I decided I wanted to do when I retired. “I’ve really enjoyed it, it’s been a good networking opportunity as well as an educational one, and I’m really excited about what doors it opens up in the future. “When I finished playing, I asked myself: ‘Well, what do I do now?’. “I like the coaching side of the game, and I’m still really ambitious about that, but I needed something else as well. This gave me a focus which is what I needed at the time. “I reached out to the PFA when I heard about the course and it’s something that I was passionate about doing; something I could get my teeth into. “The technical aspects of the sporting directorship role I really admire, and maybe in the future it’s a role that I’d like to fill.” The 33-year-old has also been studying for his UEFA Pro Licence since retiring in 2024Getty Jones has also been working towards completing his UEFA Pro Licence since hanging up his boots last year. As part of his coaching studies, he has spent time working with United’s academy in recent months. The 33-year-old took the decision to end his playing career after several years of injury setbacks. His fitness woes included a 15-month lay-off due to a knee injury which spanned the entire 2021/22 season. During his career, the centre-back won 27 caps for the Three Lions and featured at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He also made 204 Premier League appearances across spells at Blackburn and United.
