Justin Fields has a plan for his post-NFL career.

Needless to say, this year didn’t go how Fields was probably hoping for. He began the season as the starter for the New York Jets, and after a number of tumultuous, unproductive starts, the former 11th overall pick out of Ohio State was benched. It’s been a tough go for the talented 26-year-old athlete, but through it all, he’s been outspoken about his faith in God.

It’s a movement that we’ve seen more and more of in recent years. Stars of the NFL and other professional sports leagues are becoming more open about their faith, and not shying away from sharing their relationship with God. It’s refreshing to see, especially since there was a time where it seemed as though being outspoken about Christianity was frowned upon.

Mainly by the “don’t mix religion with sports” crowd.

Athletes like Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Baker Mayfield are both shining examples of NFL players having no problem speaking on their faith. It was actually Mayfield who more recently shared that, if it wasn’t for his relationship with Christ, he may not have had the career turnaround that he’s experienced in Tampa Bay.

And Justin Fields can now be added to the list of pro-athletes sharing how God has been working in his life. When he sat down with The Walk Foundation podcast, Fields spoke about how when he was at his lowest earlier this year, the Lord let him know that everything was going to be okay:

“I was kind of going through it. I don’t have social media, but the week before when I got benched, my step-mom, my sister and my mom all sent me a text at the same time. It was just a link of me talking about my faith on social media. They all three just send me a text at one time. I just felt God in that moment, right then and there.”

Justin Fields says he later broke down, not because he had been benched, but because he was given evidence from God that He was still with him, even in the valley of his career.

That moment helped the NFL QB realize that the Lord is always working, and sometimes it’s just up to us to slow things down enough to see the work God is doing, and hear from Him:

“I believe God talks to us each and every day, you just have to listen. It’s easy for all of us to get caught up in everything that’s going on in the world. Whether it’s chaos, news, or stuff happening in general, sometimes when I feel like that, I just have to look up to the sky. It kind of always brings me back.”

So even though this year – and his NFL career as a whole – haven’t gone as planned, Justin Fields is in a good place. Why? Because he knows his value comes from God, and not from football. And Fields feels so comforted by that feeling that he wants to help others find their faith when he officially hangs it up as a pro-athlete:

“I think I want to be a missionary. I think I want to go to different countries, go to different places and be able to spread His word and help people find Christ, and help people get that relationship started with Him. I’ve actually been talking to a few friends and I’m gonna try to go somewhere, whether it’s somewhere in Africa, somewhere where people haven’t necessarily gotten the opportunity to build that relationship. I think that’s what I’m going to pursue, but I just love helping people out and love being a servant to others.

It’s been on my heart for a minute so I think I’m gonna make my first mission trip this off season.”

Pretty commendable stuff right there… and unfortunately for Justin, his football career might be over sooner rather than later. Although, later in the podcast he said that he was planning his first missions trip during this upcoming offseason.
