Yeah, having a sister who’s best known for swinging naked on a wrecking ball is probably tough…

Of course Miley Cyrus is known for a lot more than that. The daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus got her big break in the entertainment industry on the Disney Channel show Hannah Montana, but eventually decided that she wanted to shed her child-friendly image. And when she did, she really went for it…

Back in 2013, Miley made headlines and found herself at the center of controversy after performing with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards, during which she twerked and simulated sex acts on a foam finger while wearing a skin-colored latex bikini. And that same day, she released the infamous “Wrecking Ball” music video from her fourth studio album Bangerz. The video featured the then-20 year old ditching her clothes as she swung on the wrecking ball, and raised concerns that Miley was being exploited in an attempt to drastically change her image.

Unfortunately that reputation has been hard for Miley to shake, despite the fact that she’s undeniably an incredible vocalist.

Well during a recent appearance on Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaimed with Monica Lewinsky podcast, Miley recalled how tough it is for her to look back on that period of her life:

“It was really hard for me in 2013. I lost everything during that time in my personal life because of the choices I was making professionally. If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart. No one wanted to date me because they didn’t want to be with a woman – that sexual expression part was not for them. It was like, shared with the world.

So guys, when I would try to date, when I was dating, or I was engaged at the time, that didn’t work out because I was sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved for them only. And the fact that I would pose nude or dance in very little clothes or show my body was making them feel like I was taking something away that was meant to be for them.”

Miley also admits that it was hard to go home and look her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, in the eye, and that she knew it was hurting her grandmother, who she calls her “best friend.”

“Having that and going home and seeing my grandparents was just mortifying, or Thanksgiving with my uncle.”

And she also admits that she had guilt over how hard it was to be her siblings or parents. Miley has two younger siblings who were still in school at the time, and says that it was hard on them when she was out there projecting a sexualized image:

“There was even a time where my brother and sister didn’t want to go to school because of how humiliated they were to be related to me. I remember even my brother, at one point, he was saying, ‘I don’t judge you. But you can understand how hard it is for me to go to school and you be my sister.”

Even Miley’s godmother, country legend Dolly Parton, expressed her reservations about just how far Miley was going with her image, though she said that ultimately she would support her doing things her own way:

“If I didn’t know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her. But I’ve watched her grow up. So I don’t. She knows what she’s doing.

She was very proud of the work she did as Hannah Montana, but people were gonna leave her there forever. And she was just smotherin’ and chokin’ in it. So she felt she had to do something completely drastic. And she did.

She made her point, she made her mark, and more power to her. “Wrecking Ball” is a great song. The whole album is great. So I’m hoping that now she can relax and show people how talented she really is. ’Cause the girl can write. The girl can sing. The girl is smart. And she doesn’t have to be so drastic. But I will respect her choices.

I did it my way, so why can’t she do it her way?”

It seems that Miley is ready to leave that image in the past, which is probably a good thing because of just how talented she is. She should let that shine through and do the talking for her.
