The 28-year-old and his brother, Andre Silva, who was also a professional footballer, were killed while they were travelling from Penafiel in Spain when their car went off the road. According to the Guardia Civil, the accident occurred after Jota and his brother’s Lamborghini ‘left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking.’ “It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. “The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.” When asked to confirm the identities of those involved in the accident, the Guardia Civil said: “The player and his brother, Andre Silva.” Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region also confirmed the crash. “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire,” a statement read. “1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.  “From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.” Jota’s tragic death came just two weeks after he married long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso in Portugal. Tributes have flowed across social media from prominent football figures as they mourned the loss of the Portuguese star. All my love and best wishes to the family.” Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher said: “Devastating news about Diogo Jota and his brother Andre this morning. Jota made over 180 appearances for the Reds and registered 91 goal contributions

Jota began his professional career in 2014 with Portuguese side Pacos de Ferreira, before he moved to Atletico Madrid two years later.

However, he did not play a game for the Spanish giants as he spent two seasons on loan at Porto and Wolves.

The 28-year-old joined Wolves permanently in the summer of 2018 after they were promoted from the Championship and remained there for a further two seasons before he joined Liverpool in a £45million deal in 2020.

Jota quickly endeared himself to the Anfield faithful when he scored his first goal for the club on his home debut in a 3-1 win over Arsenal in September 2020.

He found the net a further 64 times for the Reds throughout his 182 appearances as he also tallied 26 assists.

This included the nine he scored in Liverpool’s triumphant 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

As well as a Premier League crown, Jota helped Liverpool win an FA Cup and EFL Cup in the 2021/22 campaign.
