But the four-time Grammy Award winner still has a close connection to former Ipswich stars, including one from the 2000s. During an exclusive interview with talkSPORT.com ahead of the release of EA SPORTS F1 25, Jacques said: “I talked about Pablo Counago with Ed Sheeran and that was…” “I felt like my brain was shearing in half,” Jacques joked. “That’s what you get with commentators – Nonsense like that! “No, but I don’t know how that happened. I don’t know how I watched Ipswich get promoted with Ed Sheeran. “But yeah, we were talking about favourite players and that’s one for all the town fans out there. Pablo Counago. Loved him.” Spaniard Counago, who played nearly 250 games for Ipswich during two separate spells, remains a cult hero at Portman Road. Sheeran’s F1 crossover saw him share his love of Counago One figure that the 45-year-old is less fondly remembered by is Roy Keane, who was in charge of the Blues between 2009 and 2011. The former Manchester United midfielder claimed Counago was ‘dead lazy’ during their time together in his 2014 autobiography. Keane said ex-forward Counago was “a player I didn’t particularly like or get on with” and added “I nearly physically attacked him”. For his part, the Ipswich fan favourite hit back to describe Keane as a ‘mess as a football manager’ and a ‘coward’. That latter insult is the furthest thing fans could throw at the men Jacques oversees from the F1 commentary box. The 36-year-old spent 10 seasons on microphone duty for Formula 2 and 3, leaving at the end of last year to focus on motorsport’s elite. Jacques has already covered several standout moments in F1, but has the perfect way in which his journey could be mirrored on track. It doesn’t have to be a specific one.
