Dolly Parton back on the big screen?

Much like a lot of the other country music stars of yesteryear, the incomparable Dolly Parton was just as much a force on the silver screen as she was recording music. That being said, most would obviously know her more from her music career over her acting career.

Parton starred in a number of films in her heyday, and one her most notable hits was the 1980 workplace comedy known as 9 to 5. The movie, starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and the great Dolly Parton, became the highest grossing comedy of 1980. It also produced the iconic title song that I’d argue almost everyone knows.

And the movie still holds up to this day. Fonda, Tomlin and Parton all played secretaries who worked together to take down their sexist boss. It was sort of a pro “Me Too” movie that took place decades before the actual movement got started. Though the film approached the subject in a very poignant way.

Dolly Parton has always shown interest in trying to get a sequel off the ground, but it’s never come to fruition, as she told the Huffington Post:

“Jane, Lily and I have been trying for years to try to come up with a ‘9 to 5: Two’ through the years. It never happened.”

But now, that sequel is somewhat taking off… albeit with a presumed all new cast. Screenwriter Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Baby) is attacked to the project, and movie and TV star Jennifer Aniston has been set to co-produce the film under the banner of her Echo Films.

It’s more of a reboot than it is a sequel, but Anniston has apparently reached out to Dolly and others from the original to see if they’d be interested in joining on. Here’s what Parton had to say about that:

“In Jennifer’s story, they wanted us to be involved in it somehow. But we have no plans to be in that.”

Bummer. Maybe no plans… so far? Or Dolly is keeping her appearance in the upcoming project under wraps like she’s making a cameo in a Marvel movie? I’m just spit-balling here.

The country music legend cited a couple of different reasons for not wanting to be in the new movie, such as her age and her appearance (just ridiculous if you ask me). But Dolly Parton played coy and said it’s time for some others to step into the roles:

“I think a lot of it is that, you know, we’re all older now. We’re not gonna look that good on the big screen. All of us up there with all those beautiful, young, fresh people.”

Though she might not be starring in the film (emphasis on the might), Dolly is offering up any help that she can. She’s apparently already stated that Anniston and the rest working on the new movie can use the iconic “9 to 5” song that spawned from the original film, and Dolly has also offered to write new music for the reboot:

“The script I read, I thought, was really good and a new and different take that really brings the office up to date the way that people live now.

I really would love to see the show, and I’d love to be able to write some music, be involved in that way with it. I will be as involved as I need to be, or as I can be.”

Personally, I’ll be excited to watch the new take on 9 to 5. Do I hope that Dolly Parton at least makes a small appearance in the film? You bet I do. It seems to only make sense, and it would be the perfect tip of the cap to the original from 1980.

Which like I said, still holds up:
